Default 4x09 The Royal Road to the Unconscious

EPISODE NINE - THE ROYAL ROAD TO THE UNCONSCIOUS

SCENE ONE - THE OCEAN - AFTERNOON

A largish boat drifts through the waves. On deck, two men sit around a table with a map, and a crude-looking radio. Of the two men, there is an OLDER MAN, near 60 years old, bearded and wearing an old fisherman’s hat and a YOUNGER MAN, shaved face and shaved head, currently with his coat draped over a nearby railing. Meanwhile a third man calmly steers the boat through the small waves. On the hull, the word ‘CERBERUS’ is expertly written in black. There is nothing but blue ocean surrounding them.

A Kind of Magic, by Queen, blasts from the radio.

(RADIO): One dream one soul one prize one goal

YOUNGER MAN: Christ, turn that off. We’re supposed to be keeping our channels open for a signal.

(RADIO): One golden glance of what should be

Glancing up at his shipmate, far from impressed, the older man slowly switches the radio from ‘cassette’ to ‘inc. sig’. At this moment, the radio begins cycling through the multitude of channels it had been programmed to search, 16 in all; swishing and swirling noises emit from it, finding nothing. Once it reaches the 16th channel it begins its cycle once more, but this time manages to grab onto something.

(RADIO): 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

(RADIO): 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

The YOUNGER MAN stands up, excited and apprehensive, puts his hand on the radio and turns up the volume.

(RADIO): 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42

YOUNGER MAN: Follow the heading of that channel; that’s our signal!

The younger man looks both relieved and excited.

OLDER MAN (in French): You get that, Descartes?

Raising his hand, DESCARTES – the pilot - acknowledges the order.

After a moment Descartes calls back to the two men hunched over the maps.

DESCARTES (In French): Bad whether coming, Roofs. And the compass is malfunctioning. We should probably try and go around these clouds up ahead.

Glancing at the younger man and responding to his name, the older man shakes his head.

ROOFS (In French): No, we hold this heading. We have our orders.

Deflated slightly, Descartes nods and continues browsing the horizon.

The younger man grabs his coat and puts it on in one swift movement. Across his chest pocket is the name ‘RADZINSKY’ in black on a white tag. Below the tag, on the pocket, is an octagon framing the black and white, ying and yang symbol. RADZINSKY nods to Roofs, and walks over to a nearby ladder; leading down, below deck.

DESCARTES (In French): Why are you – we – taking orders from him? She’s your boat, Roofs.

ROOFS (In French): It’s important that we do this, believe me. Giving him authority on my boat is the least of my worries

Roofs watches glumly as Radzinsky disappears down the hatch.

Presently, there is an almighty crash. Roofs is sent flying forward in the direction he was looking. Descartes screams something inaudible. Water thrashes up over onto the deck. Roofs drags himself up via the table

ROOFS (In French): Descartes, REPORT!

Descartes struggles to regain balance himself

DESCARTES (In French): No idea, Captain! We must have hit some…

But before he can finish, they are knocked aside again, except this time it is followed by an almighty roar. Grabbing his maps and shoving them into his pocket, Roofs gives up trying to communicate with the now out-of-sight Descartes; instead he turns back to the hatch, where Radzinsky’s head has appeared.

ROOFS: Make sure the others are OK!!

Radzinsky nods and then disappears back down the hatch. The roar comes once more, and another wood-splitting collision explodes into the side of the boat. Roofs is thrown to the floor again, crashing his head against the table. He slowly loses consciousness. The rain has begun and it has suddenly become dark…

SCENE TWO - THE BEACH - AFTERNOON

Two men rush to the aid of an unconscious woman. Descartes is one of the men...

Descartes turns the woman over onto her back. It is a heavily pregnant DANIELLE Rousseau.

DESCARTES (In French): Wake up! Damn it! Wake up!

Eventually, Danielle stirs and begins to awake.

DANIELLE (In French):
Where is Robert? (In English) Where is Robert? (Spanish) Where is he?

All at once, she sits up and regains her bearings, gasping for air

DESCARTES (In French): Woah! Take it easy their Danny.

ROBERT (In French): I’m here Danielle, are you OK? How do you feel?

DANIELLE (In French): I’m fine, just give me room!

Danielle pushes Robert and Descartes away from her.

Radzkinsky, Roofs and another man (MONTAND) appear from within the wreckage, they are carrying supplies and guns.

MONTAND (In French): The hull is destroyed beyond repair and I can’t get a signal. Well, nothing except the distress signal, repeating those numbers over and over again. 4 8 15 16 23 42, over and over. Enough to drive you mad…

Turning to Radzinsky, Descartes begins to rant

DESCARTES (In French): Why didn’t you listen? I told you there was a storm coming, but we had to follow you and your damn orders!

RADZINSKY (In English): Calm down, mon ami. We were brought here by fate, and we all survived at the mercy of it. So I suggest you calm yourself down before you give yourself another problem…

DESCARTES (In French):
Don’t give me that fate nonsense – Danielle is pregnant, who knows what could have happened… and I am not your friend.

Descartes seethes.

ROBERT (In French): We should head in land. And find that distress signal. Right, Captain? We should try and find out who sent that signal, maybe they need help. Danielle, maybe you should stay…

DANIELLE (In French): Do not even think it, Robert. You may be the father of our child but you do not have the right to order me to do anything…

ROOFS (In French): We should all stick together. We’re here now, no point in trying to leave just yet. Anyway, those numbers are rather interesting. I wonder what they mean…

DESCARTES (In French): They sound like the rambles of a mad man, to me…

They begin packing supplies and ammunition.

ROBERT (In French): You’re always so skeptical, Descartes.

Descartes, smiles...

DESCARTES: Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum

ROBERT (In French): What on earth are you talking about…?

DANIELLE (In English):
It’s Latin, Robert: “I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am…”

They begin their trek inland.

SCENE THREE - THE BEACH - LATE AFTERNOON

It’s getting dark and it is raining. Everyone has pitched their makeshift tents to protect themselves from the rain.

Under a large tented area, SAYID and JACK are conversing over dinner. Both are eating from tins of Dharma beans.

SAYID: We need to talk about Danielle. She’s making people nervous. I think you can remember what happened the last time she resided in our camp.

Jack laughs ironically

JACK: And what exactly do you recommend, Sayid?

SAYID: I think she may be keeping something from us. I’ll talk to her

Jack doesn’t look convinced.

JACK: Last time you ‘talked’ to someone, Sayid. I had to stop you from killing him, and the time before that? You stabbed Sawyer. So tell me, why should I let

SAYID: I was not asking for your permission. I do not like the situation; the boat has not arrived, Ben has escaped, Kate and Sawyer are missing. John Locke has mysteriously disappeared again.

Jack cuts Sayid off…

JACK: And Juliet. Juliet is missing too…

Ignoring him, Sayid continues.

SAYID: Danielle is all we have. She knows something, I can’t explain how or why I know, but she does. And she will tell me.

Sayid throws his empty tin into a nearby bag and walks off into the rain

****

SCENE FOUR - THE JUNGLE - MORNING

From front to back: Roofs, Radzinsky, Danielle, Montand, Descartes and Robert walk through the jungle, weapons at their side.

Danielle, Montand and Roofs are walking together

DANIELLE (In French): I had a dream last night, that there were people living in this jungle – shadowy people, without faces but with voices. Hundreds of them, they were talking at me but I could not understand what they were saying, I think they were speaking in tongues…

ROOFS (In French): Ha! I would like to meet these people whom speak a language that my daughter can not understand…

DANIELLE (In French): I killed them. All of them. In my dream, I mean. And then when I walked over to their dead bodies and looked at their faces I saw… each and every one of you.

ROOFS (In French): Dreams are the royal road to the unconscious, Danielle. They are our way of resolving conflict in our lives; wish fulfillment. Conflicts that we could not possibly resolve in our conscious lives. Without these dreams, well, we’d probably end up killing each other. The human race, that is. Not us, specifically…

DANIELLE (In French): So I subconsciously want to kill all of you?

Danielle looks dubious, Roofs shakes his head

ROOFS (In French): No, not necessarily. It’s more likely that you don’t want to be around us. The fact we’re all on this island, together. You’re pregnant. The tension between you and Robert is obvious. Radzinsky isn’t everyone’s favourite person at the moment, I chose you for this expedition and you’ve already said you blame me for being trapped here. Montand is even trying my patience at the moment, with his constant obsession over those numbers. Although, I am at a loss as to why you’d want to see Descartes metaphorically dead. You two seem to get on well…

Not paying attention, Montand doodles in a notepad. And mumbles…

MONTAND (In French): 108. Those numbers – added together - equal 108. What do you suppose that means?

Calling from behind them

DESCARTES (In French): 108 is the ten-code for “Officer down” or “Officer in danger…”

..And from in front

RADZINSKY (In English): It’s also the amount of stitches in a baseball… So what?

MONTAND (In French):
Interesting, interesting… I do think that these numbers are so very mysterious. Don’t you all think so? I think they could, perhaps, be more important than we realize. I mean, why send a distress signal repeating those numbers if they weren’t important? Why not use a phrase or at least a code that we’d be able to decipher fast enough…

ROBERT (In French):
Maybe whoever recorded the message knew someone was listening but didn’t want them to understand what they were saying…

Then, all at once, complete darkness covers them and whispering surrounds them. The 6 retreat into a single group and raise their weapons.

DANIELLE (In English - Whispering): It’s them…

Roofs glances at Danielle.

The whispers continue for a second and then stop, leaving nothing but jungle noises…
The group look around, unconvinced and still trying to understand what they had heard. And then, suddenly, a tree explodes near Montand, as it is sent hurtling up into the air. Montand is thrown to the ground.

DANIELLE: Montand!!

Roofs and Radzinsky are already running at this point, Robert follows suit and tries to grab Danielle by the wrist, but she stands firm – Robert gives her a glance and then begins to run. More trees explode, and an all too familiar roar echoes from behind them as they try to out-run it.

Robert turns around to look back for Danielle who is merely standing still – suddenly there are several flashes of white light

****

SCENE FIVE - THE BLACK ROCK - MORNING

After running for a few minutes, the 4 of them arrive at small clearing. And come face to face with a large ship…

The Black Rock, is etched on its hull

RADZINSKY (In English): Quick. We’ll hide in here until tomorrow…

DESCARTES (In French): Why is there a ship…?

ROBERT (In French): What about Danielle and Montand? We should go back.

RADZINSKY (In English): They’re dead you idiot. And unless you want to join them I suggest you get inside.

Descartes grabs Radzinsky by the scruff of the neck.

DESCARTES (In French): Give me one good reason why I should not kill you where you stand.

ROBERT (In French):
I’m going back to find them. You can wait here if you want… Descartes?

Descartes nods and let’s go of Radzinsky’s shirt. At this moment, Danielle emerges from the jungle.

ROBERT (In French): Danielle! Oh thank God you are OK… Where is Montand?

Danielle shakes her head and produces something wrapped in cloth from her backpack. She throws it to the floor and an arm rolls out, holding on to a notebook.

****

SCENE SIX - THE JUNGLE - AFTERNOON

The rain is coming down fiercely now. In a dense part of the jungle, KATE is following LOCKE who is carrying an apple in his hand, picking at it with his knife and throwing segments into his mouth. Kate follows alongside him, looking confused.

LOCKE: They misjudged you, Kate. They didn’t think you’d last this long.

Stopping, Kate looks up at Locke

KATE: Who are ‘they’, John. What are you talking about? What was that thing back there? And why the hell did you kill Naomi?

Smiling, Locke turns and continues walking; Kate falls back in at his side

LOCKE: That’s not important right now. But what is important… You…. Me, Jack…everyone. We’re all playing with an even keel, Kate. That’s what Jack can’t understand, and what Ben is trying to hide from us… From you. But the game, the game that we’re all playing? It manipulates us, all of us. You’ve seen it; you just saw it back there. The frightening thing about this island isn’t that we’re being hunted or attacked, murdered even, it’s the freedom we have over our own destiny; this island is a royal road to our subconscious, Kate. It’s terrifying I know, but…

Locke stops at this moment, and turns to face Kate straight on

LOCKE: If you believe in what you’re doing, on this island…”

Locke Inhales deeply, with a glint of a smile

LOCKE: You can do just about anything. If you make the choice. Don’t be fooled, Kate. Sometimes the game plays you…

Locke begins to walk away from Kate

KATE: Wait, where are you going? I’ll come with you, it’s not safe.

LOCKE:
Each and every one of us, Kate. We’re all special! Follow your own path, not somebody else’s!

With that, Locke slowly disappears behind a multitude of trees, leaving Kate in the middle of nowhere. Strangely confident, Kate breathes in deeply and heads off in the opposite direction.

****

SCENE SEVEN - OPEN PLAINS - AFTERNOON

The 5 of them: Roofs, Radzinsky, Danielle, Descartes and Robert are in a more hilly area now.

Descartes is reading from the notebook, last seen with Montand.

DESCARTES (In French): He wrote a lot for the short time we were here. Some of it is pretty interesting too…

RADZINSKY (In English): Look!!

Radzinsky points straight ahead, they have finally made it to the radio tower.

****

SCENE EIGHT - INSIDE A TENT - LATE AFTERNOON

Sayid enters the tent; Danielle is sitting upright sleeping, her hands tied behind her back. She looks a lot cleaner since the last time she was seen; the dried blood had been whipped from her skin, although her cuts are still visible the padding used to cover her gunshot wound looks fresh.

Sayid sits down on a nearby rock.

SAYID: Do you know how you can tell that someone is guilty?”

Stirring, Danielle awakes.

SAYID: For instance, if you were to arrest three people – three suspects – and you keep them all in confinement overnight. Whoever is sleeping the next morning; that is the one who is guilty. This is because, if you are guilty you let your guard down and you rest. Do you understand?

DANIELLE: Are you going to hurt me, Sayid?

Sayid stirs, uneased by Danielle’s choice of words

SAYID: No Danielle, I am not going to hurt you. But you are going to tell me why you came to this island, and how you got here. And with our impending rescue, I also want you to tell me about the sickness...

Danielle’s eyes shift around in their sockets. Until they finally stop dead on something - someone - behind Sayid. It is Danielle's father, Roofs.

Danielle explodes into a fit of anger.

DANIELLE: No… NO! I killed you! I killed all of you! You died! I killed them! I killed them all!

Sayid jumps back, ready to defend himself. And looks in the direction of where Danielle is focusing her anger but sees nothing.

Danielle calms down slightly and stares straight at the figure behind Sayid, seething through her teeth.

****

SCENE NINE - THE RADIO TOWER - AFTERNOON

Danielle, Roofs and Descartes search inside. Robert searches the immediate area.

Sitting down at the controls, Descartes puts on the headphones and hears the numbers again.

DESCARTES (In French): Yep, this is the place.

They begin searching the various draws and documents scattered

Descartes finds several books, and begins to flick through them. They each have a Dharma symbol on it with a ‘key’ in the middle…

DESCARTES (In French): Hey, check this out. Some of the stuff in here is similar to what Montand was working on…

RADZINSKY (In French): Give me those!

Radzinsky grabs the books off of Descartes.

DESCARTES (In French): Hey! The symbol on those books, it’s similar to the one on your jacket… What the hell’s going on here?! Is that why we’re here? Is this what the big mission is all about? Is that why Montand had to die? The numbers… is their meaning explained in those books?

Raising his gun, Descartes takes aim at Radzinsky.

ROOFS (In French): René!

DESCARTES (In French): Start talking, now. Or I’ll blow you’re head off. Tell me what the numbers mean. If you don’t I’ll shoot you where you stand...

ROOFS (In French): René, stand down..!

Danielle points her rifle at Descartes.

DESCARTES (In French): Tell me now!! Or else…! Or else I’ll…

At this moment, Descartes swings the rifle round in the direction of Danielle and Roofs. Danielle pulls the trigger, and shoots Descartes in the gut. He is instantly thrown back, down onto the floor…

Robert appears at the door, obviously alerted by the gun fire.

Descartes wheezes and dies

Radzinsky relaxes, but Danielle trails the gun onto him now.

DANIELLE (In English): Start talking, mon ami…

****

SCENE TEN - THE JUNGLE - AFTERNOON

Kate is walking, at pace, through the jungle. Then, instantly, she hears a gunshot explode, a little ways to her right. She then begins running in the direction of the gunshot…

…After a while she comes out into a clearing and sees SAWYER, covered in blood.

SAWYER: Kate…

Kate is visually happy to see Sawyer, but has to contain herself from breaking into tears. She runs into his arms…

Behind Sawyer, Kate see’s the body of JULIET. Kate pushes away from Sawyer in fear. At this moment, Sawyer turns around to see what Kate has seen. Turning, Sawyer reveals a gun lodged down his back, in his jeans.

Acting instinctively, Kate steals the gun from Sawyer and points it at him. He turns around to face her…

KATE: What…What did you do, Sawyer?

The gun shakes. Tears begin to run down Kate’s face.

SAWYER: I didn’t do nuthin’, I heard a gun go off and found her this way. She was with Ben, I left her here with that bug eyed ghoul, he’s the one that did this to her, not me…

KATE: You left her with him… Then why do you have the gun, James? And not Ben?

SAWYER: C’mon Freckles, I didn’t do this… You know me.

KATE: I do… I know exactly who you are, what you are. And I can’t….won’t be like you. I won’t do it, James. That’s my choice…

Kate grips tighter to the gun, it continues to shake

KATE:
Turn around! On your knees!

SAWYER: Kate…?

Kate fires a round off into the ground near Sawyer’s foot.

SAWYER: Son of a… OK! OK!

Sawyer turns around and drops to his knees, instinctively placing his hands on his head.

SAWYER: OK, now what? Kate…?

Sawyer slowly turns around to find Kate has ran…

****

SCENE ELEVEN - THE JUNGLE - AFTERNOON

Sayid paces back and forth in front of a slightly calmer Danielle. She is not looking at him though, instead she still looks straight at her father.

SAYID: So what did he say? This, Radzinsky?

DANIELLE: Very little. He had been trained to keep quiet… You would have liked him, Sayid. We were heading back to our camp, when we were attacked by the Security System once more… I saw a bright light, for a second time – I am not sure if it was warning me or trying to communicate.... And then it disappeared. And with it, Radzinsky was gone too; with those books… those keys. He must have slipped away while we were preoccupied with that machine. That was the last I saw of him.

SAYID: And then what happened.

DANIELLE:
We returned to camp and I had my child… Alex. Then, they took her….

SAYID: The Others.

DANIELLE: You remember well, Sayid. And then I killed Robert and my father.

SAYID:
But why would you…

DANIELLE: They got sick. Obsessed, and they betrayed me. I assumed it was something biological – a virus - but having met your large friend – Hugo – it has since become apparent to me that perhaps their sickness was caused by the numbers.

SAYID: Desmond was taking medication while he was down in the hatch. Meanwhile, he entered the numbers into a computer…

DANIELLE: Then you, too, know of the numbers? And this computer, where is it? I must see it!

SAYID: It is gone. Destroyed. But why has nobody else been effected, Danielle?

DANIELLE: If we had. Who would notice?

****

SCENE ELEVEN - THE JUNGLE - AFTERNOON

The 3 sit around a camp fire. Danielle feeds her newborn, while Roofs and Robert converse.

ROBERT (In French): I heard them, in the jungle. Like those in your dreams, Danielle. There are… Others, on this island. They spoke to me. They said that I needed to find out the meaning to the numbers; they said it was my destiny.

ROOFS (In French):
You’re beginning to sound insane, Robert. There are no others on this island. And there’s certainly no such thing as destiny. Your dreams are just trying to finalize and finish your experience with the numbers; to explain…

ROBERT (In French): You are wrong old man! My dreams do not give me answers; they give me questions! They give me drive and meaning. And I’ll be damned if you will stop me. I’ll do anything to follow my own path. Anything!

Robert grabs his rifle and heads off into the jungle

DANIELLE (In French): I thought you would have gone with him, father.

ROOFS:
Dubito, ergo cogito, ergo sum. (In French): “I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am…” He believes he is following his own mind, but he is surely following someone - or something - else’s. Until he doubts himself he will never find true meaning or existence. Although, perhaps it was not wise of me to let him leave with a loaded weapon...

Producing the firing pin, Danielle smirks…

DANIELLE (In French): You didn’t…

SCENE TWELVE - BEACH - NIGHT

Danielle is sleeping and then awakes suddenly to the sound of whispering and a tune playing (a music box).

(WHISPERS): Take the child

(WHISPERS):
He walks among us

(WHISPERS): …the child

(WHISPERS): But he is not one of us

(WHISPERS):
Become enlightened

(WHISPERS): Follow your destiny

Danielle rushes to find that Alex is gone. She lets out an almighty scream and scrambles looking for a rifle and grabs a flashlight

DANIELLE (In French):
He took her! He took Alex!

ROOFS (In French): Alright, alright. We will find him. Do not worry, we will find him. Gather some supplies we will head out as soon as possible. Can you track him…? Danielle!? Can you track him?

DANIELLE (In French): What!? What? Yes. Of course. Now, let’s go…

****

SCENE THIRTEEN - THE RADIO TOWER- AFTERNOON

Danielle enters the radio tower to find Robert, mumbling and frantically searching through the documents. Startled, Robert – looking paranoid and stressed - turns around to face Danielle.

Robert raises his rifle and points it at Danielle

ROBERT (In French): Four, eight, fifteen, sixteen, twenty-three, forty-two…

Danielle raises her rifle, Robert pulls the trigger but nothing happens

DANIELLE (In French): Where is she? Where is she, Robert? Alex… Where is she?!

Robert looks confused, like he can’t understand what she is saying…

ROBERT (In French): Four, eight, fifteen….

Danielle shoots Robert in the leg, and steps closer. He goes down –dropping his rifle - onto his hands and knees, screaming in pain.

DANIELLE (In French): Father!

She turns back to see Robert with a gun to his head…

DANIELLE (In English): No!!

ROBERT (In English - Whispering): Everything is possible for him who believes.

Robert pulls the trigger. Danielle looks away…

After a few seconds she turns back and moves closer to a now lifeless Robert who is holding something in his hand. Danielle takes the object – a piece of paper – from him and looks at it. It is a manifest of some sort – a list of names – hand written by Robert. Danielle examines the list: its split into 2 different criteria: “Good” and “Bad”.

The names Brennan Radzinsky; René Descartes; Mulched Roofs; Montand Jung and Robert Rousseau are located in the bad column.

On the good: Alex Roofs Rousseau

The name Danielle Roofs Rousseau is sprawled across the bottom with numerous question marks and the numbers surrounding it.

Roofs appears at the door.

ROOFS (In French): Robert didn’t take Alex, Danielle. I am sorry… really. But we all have to make sacrifices for the greater good; we all have a part to play. Alex is that greater good. She is bigger, more important than you could possibly imagine. She is safe but…

DANIELLE (In English): Where is she!? Tell me now, or I will…. I will…

Roofs glances at the list in Danielle’s hand

ROOFS (In French): So which are you, Danielle? Good or Bad? Ironically, I think your next action may determine which side of that little list you belong to. Choose wisely, Danielle… Choose wise…

A shot is fired by Danielle, hitting Roofs in the stomach. Roofs scrambles back to the door and outside of the radio tower.

ROOFS (In French): Game… Over…

He closes the door on Danielle, locking her inside… Roofs scrambles a few feet before falling onto his back.

Danielle begins banging on the door. She is trapped…

****

SCENE FOURTEEN - INSIDE A TEN - LATE AFTERNOON

DANIELLE:
Have you been in a situation where you feel that you are being tested, Sayid? Pushed to your limits? Manipulated even? Something or someone manipulated me into killing Robert, Descartes, even my father... That, even though you could end it all, so easily, there is something or someone stopping you from doing it?

Sayid looks blankly at Danielle, with his chin resting in his hand.

DANIELLE: Four weeks and three days… I was stuck in that room for a month. I am thankful for the rain, and the crack in the roof that no doubt saved my life. And each night, the ghosts of those who I had killed would return – they would return. The Others. They haunted me every single night I was in that radio tower. Something chose me, Sayid. Although I felt guilt for killing them, it felt as if I was meant to do it. I was not one to easily believe in fate but I would not question its existence now. There is so much doubt in my mind – so many questions about what occurred and what I did – that I know longer judge myself for what I did…

SAYID: I doubt, therefore I think, therefore I am…

DANIELLE: That is when I changed the radio signal to the transmission that you found, Sayid. And now, here we are again. Destiny is mocking us.

DESMOND enters the tent with some fresh bandages for Danielle’s wound. He nods at Sayid – who nods back - and gestures to Danielle.

Desmond begins changing Danielle’s bandages.

SAYID: Desmond, what can you tell me of the sickness?

DESMOND:
Not a lot to tell, brother. Kelvin found me when I crashed on this rock, and he was wearing one of those Hazmat suits, y’know, like to protect against radiation or something. Kelvin lied to me about that though, and he also lied to me about that damn computer saving the world. Although I don’t blame Kelvin for that one, Radzinsky told him that…

DANIELLE:
Radzinsky…?

DESMOND: Yeah that’s the guy. Apparently the damn computer got to him and he blew his brains out. Not long before I arrived… Did you know him?

DANIELLE:
In another life…

DESMOND: Heh, yeah… Well, Radzinsky seemed quite the technician. Kelvin says he was looking for something, or trying to work something out. He created a map – in the Hatch – recorded everything he found…

DANIELLE: It was Radzinsky’s creation – this computer you speak of. He was trying to find a meaning to the numbers…

DESMOND: I’m not so sure about that. Why would someone want to input numbers over and over again into a computer while it would be just as easy to have a system in place…?

SAYID: Addiction. The Dharma Initiative probably wanted to see how far this addiction could go, and so put him down into the hatch to push the button. Entering the numbers – with the illusion they were doing something, fed the – his – addiction. He spliced the videos as well. No doubt he was delusional at that point and was attempting to create evidence to support his illness.

DESMOND: Pushing the button of a mad man. There’s something ironic about that… Anyway, I’ll be seeing you. G’night

Sayid acknowledges Desmond as he leaves the tent.

SAYID: We made a mistake... Contacting that ship. If what you say is true, then those numbers could cause unspeakable insanity.

DANIELLE:
I found them, Sayid. The keys - the books that explains the numbers and their meaning. I couldn’t make anything of what they contained but… could you bring them to me? Maybe you could help me. I think if we can work out what the numbers mean then we’ll be able to understand the Island more than... Perhaps we could... find a cure?

Sayid looks dubious

SAYID: Where are they?
