4x05 "Wish You Were Here" Discussion Thread

Here we are- number five.

Been the pretentious git I am, I shall not miss this opportunity to ramble about the episode you have just read. And Ki, you can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that you don’t have to make sense of a blood bath!

To start off every writer has the dilemma of plot vs. characters as to which will dominate the story. For me almost always plot, which is fine in most cases, but with a plot even the strongest of characters are pulled along by it and can’t make their own decisions. I decided to try something different by writing a character piece and seeing what happens. And the episode is such a difference to what I normally write. I actually deal with the characters issues- a love triangle! Grief! Guilt! These are not things normally seen in my stories, my stories normally have a twisted plot

The theme of my episode is absence. The theme is most obvious in the case of Claire, she is in denial over the death of Charlie, to the point in which she creates some sort of fantasy which is much more comfortable than reality, so it wasn’t really flash-forward, just a dream to ease the grief. Absence is also presence is Jack and Kate- the absence of each other. Jack is in love with Kate, but he can’t stand to be with her because he is reminded of this. Kate needs attention, and who better from the man who said he loved her.

Anyway, that’s my take on things. I think I the last few scenes it really kicks in, but up until then I had no idea about whether or not I liked what I was writing. But hopefully you good people will let me know whether I’m going in the right direction by writing a character drama rather than a blood bath.

Very nice Ors.

I'm really pleased that the script format has continued over now, i think it really suits this 'project'.

As for the actual story i thought it seemed very lost-esc and i'm noticing themes in a few of the episodes now that i'd really like to use when my episode comes around. I even liked (god forbid) the whole jate side of things. My only really problem with this 'episode' was how clearly you made it that Claire was making the flashforward up. I was actually anticpating a Hurley + Claire pairing throughout most of that.

However still -

Ben appears to have vanished!
The boat will apparantly never find our castaways!
Alex, Dani and Karl are (I assume) living out in the jungle!
And the rest of the others are gone?

I realise that we can assume Widmore was on the boat and that's where the whole Locke storyline has been thus far. It's a little sad that no one has mentioned Naomi's death though!

Do you mean in the show or in our season 4? I think within our 'series' Widmore has come on to the island as a part of some faction, possibly dharma, possibly something else. Anyway, now Widmore wants something from the island, something that the others have, or he thinks the others have.

But that's just my take on things.

An episode about love. How about that. I think we needed to say goodbye to Charlie, I think real Lost will have to deal with that somehow. So here is our attempt of doing that. Good title. Inspired by Pink Floyd, is it?

Was that a Claire or a Kate centric episode ?

Its natural that this was character based rather than plot based, and I think its OK to leave "our" Season 4 ("Widmore who is behind it all is on the island") alone for one episode. Also this means Ki can pick up from that and focus more on it, which means our Season 4 is becoming a bit like real Season 3.

I have one quibble though: In my episode, Desmond already said "It's not Pennys boat" which the characters should somehow acknowledge, and in fact Jack seems to have forgotten, and Desmond seems to have a bad conscience of not having told everybody.

And, Verix, I don't think the boat will arrive. Because if it does its a major continuity error. Its already landed - somewhere else. Thats how I see it anyway.

I wasn't reffering to the boat neccissarily, i more meant the people on the boat who (i'm assuming) are Widmore and co.

yeh how would the boat know exactly where they are anyway? it could have arrived at any point of the island

Ah OK, I see, but they were ambushed in my episode so they have a small problem to deal with first. Unless of course there is a second group, like they had two landing parties

Wait... who were ambushed? Locke and Des were attacked in Mrs Ferg's episode (so i believe) and in yours Widmore was asking the location of the others right? Unless you mean that Widmore's lotwere ambushed by Locke? I'm not sure.... maybe i should just re-read you episode!

The Widmore group were shot by poison darts following the arrival of the whispers while they were beating Locke. I would assume the Others as did it was described the same as the S2 finale capture of Jack, Sawyer, Hurley and Kate.

That was really good Orson! Loved the creepy Man in Black There's a lot of possibilities with him... And it was a surprise - but a nice one - to see a more character focused piece of writing from you rather than the expected bloodbath, lol. It's good to see that Charlie's death was focused on, and I was half expecting Claire's flash-forward husband to be Desmond instead of an imaginary Charlie! And it probably wasn't plesant to write any Jate, but again that's a plot point that can't really be ignored. Unfortunately. So well done on tackling the love triangle/square!

I think I'm going to have to read back through all the episodes again and get it clear in my head what's going on so far with all the Widmore/Others/rescue stuff again, as well as try and touch on as many other storylines as reasonably possible. Oh and just to warn everyone, I can't write in script to save my sorry life, so I'm going to revert back to the style of the first few authors and write in prose instead I'm afraid

Yeah when I finished reading for a moment I started to frantically think who the man in black could be, but then I realised I didn't have to worry because someone else will sort that out before the story gets to me!
