If not for Ben and his intervention in There's No Place Like Home part 3, I think that Jack would have ended up in Santa Rosa mental hospital..or worse.
![]() Let's face it, the man was spiralling out of control, popping pills like pop-tarts out of a toaster, kicking in doors to funeral homes, ranting and raving at people in chemists. The man was a mess...and he was being haunted too. Yep, that man was heading for one of two places, Santa Rosa with Hurley, or a coffin of his own. ![]() If course, we'll probably never know the answer, but you never know where the story-telling mechanism might take us in the final two seasons.

Interesting. Ben is the glue between Locke and Jack. Perhaps Ben is not the important piece of the jigsaw: hes the arm of Jacob putting the jigsaw together. "I always have a plan". The Masterplan of course, a song by Oasis (with lyrics like "The answers in the looking glass", with Charlie the britpop link (with a brother liam) to Oasis. Also to note with Oasis is "Look into the wall of your minds eye" etc.).
Would Jack have gone crazy? Probably. But the word "would" is in contention: as Fate is pretty big. And if the island can stop Micheal from killing himself, can it not hold that kind of pull upon Jack? Or is it exerting its pull through ben to achieve multiple goals? ---- Ahh the illusive new story telling system. Could be about where the island has gone. But what I really want to see, which gets me really excited and a lump in my throat everytime I think of it, is for them to revisit old scenes from a new perspective. "What you didnt see". That way so much nostalgia and great moments from the previous seasons could be revisited, but revealing so much more and being so much more potent. Cover up the patches, tie off loose ends, give us a clearer picture heading into the final stages. Enlightening. Awe-inspiring. Perpetually and paradoxically, we crave the ending and never want it to come. Kooky thread Kor - its got the brain cells ticking!
