In the season 4 finale it was inferred that Charlotte Staples Lewis was born on the island:

Let me first preface this a little more. There are not many people who are born on the island, quite literally the island rejects new births - a natural purge, some might say. But even the likes of Ben and his (now Locke's) "Others" have few island natives in his ranks (although the "natives" themselves may have been born on the island). With that in mind is it any wonder that the island looks further afield for those to do it's bidding. The Locke's, Ben's and Walt's of this world, whilst clearly "special" are not, to our knowledge, born on the island (although it's worth considering that they are born 'of' the island). They are agents hired by the island to facilitate the necessary chain of events. To what ends, is still unknown. But consider an island decendant returning 'home'. How does this reconcile with the island? What does it mean to the island? Well, so far Charlotte's return 'home' seems unimportant to the island. She has been pretty much left alone..no smokie stare-downs, no manifestations, no whispers..nothing. Is this odd, or is the island waiting for the right moment to embrace, or reject her? Clearly, her reaction upon landing was one of jubilation. It could be argued that her reaction was rivaled by Locke's awe upon 'awakening': ![]() (above image doesn't do CLS' reaction justice, watch the episode for a better insight) ![]() So what if Charlotte is back home - what does this mean to the wider picture? firstly, I think it's important to acknowledge the fact that she 'knows' she has a connection to a place once owned by the Dharma Initiative. Her brief backstory has told us that she is possibly a Dharma baby. A daughter of science returing to a land which 'hates' technology. One wonders who Charlotte is being guided by. We know that all of our Losties are "here for a reason" (even the 'sacrifices'), so it seems likely that Charlotte is also on the island for 'a' purpose. With that in mind, WHO's bidding is she unknowingly doing? Is she a threat to the island, or was she simply a threat to Ben? Ben killed her..she lived. Ben killed Keamy..he lived (for a time). The island saved Michael..the island saved Jack. What i'm trying to convery is that the island can clearly influence and intervene to suit it's own ends, yet it has chosen to stay out of the Frieghtie-Other-Lostie war. Or at least, it has used it's agents (Michael, Locke) to act on it's behalf. Why, why is the island unable/unwilling to stop CSL in her tracks? Clearly, the island felt the frieghties were a threat, so why did it not act on it own accord? Are there rules that even the island most obey? Is there island not one force.....but many? Picture a storm, if you will. It is comprised of many winds, each competing with one another, yet each part of the same (perfect) storm. Is this the true nature of the island..is there one island yet many forces which control it? Just what is the nature of Charlotte's connection? ![]()

I dont think Charlotte or the others are a threat to the island or to Ben, quite the opposite actually. I think a lot of the reason they have been introduced is to provide us with the answers to all of the mysteries that have been posed over the last four seasons. Miles is there to speak with the whispers/ghosts and explain that whole scenario for us. Charlotte is there to give us an explanation of the islands back story and culture. Daniel is there to explain the whole time travel issue and I havnt quite figured out exactly why Frank is there, except that he was suppose to be there the whole time. They will provide us and the losties with answers at the same time and somehow help them in the quest to set things straight on the island and eventually get off or stay and live peacefully with the island. Maybe all four of them are Dharma babies and they dont even know it. For instance we know it is highly possible Charlotte is one and conceivable that Miles may be one as well. Could the island be home to all of them in some way? Maybe it is their destiny to somehow help Locke with his Walkabout. After all, Abaddon did send them all to the island. They could all unwittingly be doing Abaddons work while carrying out their own agendas. Its getting very late and im getting tired. I have more thoughts on this, but I am afraid I am starting to run my thoughts together. Bye for now!

But I do agree that the four of them (esp. Dan, CSL and Miles) are there to reveal the inner mythos of the island and it's history. Yeah, I guess Frank's 'importance' stems from the fact that he cheated fate..or fate replaced him, for some reason. Quote:
![]() Yeah, it's interesting to consider what role Abbadon plays in all of this. On the one hand I believe in to be a 'good guy', but his seeming alignment with Widmore is a curious one. Perhaps Abbadon and Widmore are more loosely aligned that commonly believed?
