OK, it's clear now. If the island can stop you from killing yourself (Michael 4.08, Jack 3.23), then it seems likely that the island can stop life from spawning.
This may not seem like such a big revelation, but considering the lengths that Ben and the "Others" have gone to in their bid to find a cure..it's clear that there is no cure. The hiring of Juliet and all of her science has proved fruitless (heh!). Jacob, island representative, doesn't like "technology", so it seems likely that the island doesn't like science (technology's big sister) either. There is no scientific cure to the island's fertility problems. So why is science still such a big theme in LOST? You'd probably be better off asking why Alpert didn't want young Locke to choose the item which, from our perspective, seemed most natural to him (the knife). The Dharma Initiative brought science to the island..they are now extinct. Locke was a hunter..he is now dead. Could the answer to so many of the islands mysteries be found in 'cycles'? If at first you don't succeed, try, try and try again. Does the island learn from it's errors? Ironically, it is science which teaches us how to play around with different variables in order to succeed. Could Alpert be trying different variables in his bid to successfully carry out the "more important objectives"? If we're indeed looking at cycles, this could be the one way around paradox. The Universe..or should that be 'the Multiverse', can only course correct within it's own time frames. Outside of that it has no jurisdiction, no authority, no court marshal. This is not alternate Universes i'm talking about here..nor parallel. It's quite literally the 'cycle' of 'life'. ![]()
