Why are the Oceanic 6 so famous?

Is it just me or does anyone else think there must be something more to the Oceanic 6 to make them so famous? I mean does anyone else know the name of any famous air crash survivors?

Even if you made an exception for Hurley, a survivor AND a lottery winner (you'd maybe wanna touch him for luck! ha) and Kate, a fugitive, why would anyone want to have Jack's autograph?

We know that time works differently on the island, so what if they've been gone for a really long time? and that's why they're so famous.

I think it could be to do with the fact that they surivived a plane crash in which no-one surivived, thus unvieling a potential cover up - particulary since it was widely reported that it crashed in the pacific. It would be a bit like if some people turned up now with proof that they survived the 9/11 attacks - dispite being on the plane thus proving they were fake.

Think back to when Sayid tells the guy he shoots on the golf course "I'm one of the Oceanic 6"...
He gets really freaked out.. This COULD be because he's just somehow realised that Sayid's about to kill him. Or it COULD be because of the freaky circumstances in which the Oceanic 6 returned from the island.

Argh!! Doesn't it just make you wanna land in the world of Lost and look up "Oceanic 6" on their google, and find all their BBC and news pages You know, then we'd know exactly what the public knows about the O6 in the show

(I've just Lost Fever really... I mean you wouldn't want to hear that info via a spoiler, but you DO really want to know the answers...)

I just don't think their plane crashing is quite on the same level as 9/11, but i suppose we will see!

Well tbh if I'd heard there was a plane at the bottom of the ocean and all the bodies had been found then suddenly there were 6 survivors I'd be thinking they may be a tad more than just famous crash survivors.

Well to be honest I think it will be more yes they have crashed on a island that no one knew about and then people would want to know about it. But I think that there be some cover up because if you go back to season 4 episode 1 the lack guy asks Hurley if the others are still alive so they obviously discovered something big and in the Sayid centric episode when he is talking to Ben Ben you remember what they did and you were foolish to follow your heart once instead of your gun. I think the people he has killed so far have a part to play cuz my theory apart from the frieghties that land in the island I reckon the ones on the freighter get orders to kill all of the survivors. and Sayid acts like a hitman for Ben because the people who were trying to kill them were working for those people so ben and sayid look for revenge

The famous six must be???.... Kate, Jack, Hurley, Sayid, Sun and Aaron???? Maybe they're famous because they survived the un-survivable for so long... could they have been missing for years? Remember we've not seen any of them re-united with family members etc in these flash forwards (only a reference to Jack's -dead-! dad working 'upstairs') Faraday does mention that time isn't what we think it is, ie in going to/from island, doesn't he throw a flare to test this? + the helicopter takes no time to arrive on the Freighter but seems to be gone for days to those left on the island. (It's all about time & time travel - but without the DeLorean and plutonium!!!)

Well, we saw Kate reunited (in a way) with her mother when she's going through the court case. And given how sick she was, I don't imagine a great deal of time had passed since Kate snuck into the hospital to see her before the crash. Harsh maybe but if a lot of time had passed I'd assume maybe her mum would have been dead by then.
