This is a simple (and unlikely to be correct) theory concerning the identity of the person in the coffin - who’s funeral Jack attended in his “Through The Looking Glass” flash forward. It is also an alternative to my "Double Amputee" theory.
This theory hinges on the possibility that the creators have already thrown us a fishbiscuit (i.e. clue) as to ‘coffin mans’ identity in the premiere episode of Season 4, “The Beginning of the End” and the Season 3 finale. In the Season 3 finale (”Through the Looking Glass”) Jack is clearly remorseful over this persons death - he touches the lid of the coffin in a such a tender and loving way - he must have been fairly close to this person. However the clue comes moments before he knocks back the last of his medication - he utters the words “Damn it!”. This is exactly what he says in the S4 premiere episode, when he realises that it’s Hurley who the police are chasing, he says “Damn it!” moments before taking a drink of his vodka and OJ. Could this parallel be a clue pointing towards Hurley being the man inside the coffin? It would certainly make sense on several levels - including the fact that Jack’s says “damn it” before taking his medication - we know that Hugo has spent a fair portion of his adult life on medication and was back on the pills in the S4 premiere - a clue, perhaps? The possible downfall in this theory is the fact that the man inside the coffin received no fanfare and little turnout for his funeral - in the S4 premiere we saw that the Oceanic 6, of which Hurley was a member, were depicted as “celebrities”. Jack even revealed that he has to sign autographs, and we saw the adulation he received from the man inside the pharmacy in “TTLG”. Which would suggest that the man inside the coffin was not a member of the Oceanic Six, and therefore is not Hurley. However, there could be ways around this - perhaps it’s related to the “upgrade” that Mathew Abbadon spoke of - perhaps his agency, whoever that may be, helped him to ‘fake’ his own death? Eitherway, I think that Hugo is a possibility - especially upon noticing the “Damn it” reference which Jack makes in “TTLG” and “TBoTE”. I should state that my logic suggests that the “O6″ are Kate, Jack, Hurley, Claire (and Aaron), Locke, Jin or Sun (and possibly Ben by ‘other’ means - forcibly removed perhaps? residing inside Abaddon’s “facility”?). I also think that Locke is perhaps more likely to be inside the coffin, as this theory puts forward.

I literally just posted in your other thread saying it could be Hurley in the coffin!! But i deleted it to post in here...it's a possibility that it's Hurley, you never know with Lost. He could have gone so crazy over the situation that he killed himself? Or worse, a manifestation of his subconscious made him kill himself? (Dave, Charlie, etc...remember Dave almost succeeded once). And it was Hurley's death which made Jack realise that he needed to go back to the island? Hurley was telling him that they were wrong, that they needed to go back...and Jack said "we're never going back". Well as we saw in Jack's FF, he changes his mind. Could Hurley's death cause Jack's realisation?
Also, Hurley could fit in that coffin...maybe...i think it looked quite wide, imo. Maybe a slimmer Hurley...well, he did seem to be losing his appetite in his FF, remember the cop offered him a donut and he said no! :O OR....as Roco mentioned, Hurley could have faked his own death? Maybe he was so sick of being a 'celebrity' and having to lie about it that he either killed himself or faked his death. This could be related to Mathew's proposition...or maybe Hurley still has enough money to make it happen...it COULD be done! As has been mentioned in another thread, the only other 2 coffins we have seen in Lost have been empty...what if this one is too?! Definately possible imo! I'm gonna keep this theory in mind...

Well Jack was depressed in the flash forward before he found out about the dead person.
But I do like the idea of it being Hurley in the coffin, not that I want Hurley to die It would just make sense as to why Jack was so upset about it because Hurley was saying they should go back but Jack did not agree, then Hurley dies and Jack is upset that he didn't listen...

Yeah...that's the only thing. Lol. Though to be honest, we dont actually know if the teenage son thing is true...whoever's in the coffin. You know what Lost is like for red herrings.

Hmm, possibly - but the the length and width of the coffin seems to be deceptive from certain angles. I agree that it might not be the right size for Hugo though.
Quote:
Yeah, the coffin could also be empty, I think I posted some examples in the Double Amputee thread, it certainly could be a possibility. Which would then bring the question over to not who is in the coffin - but who has faked their own death - like you, I am coming round to the idea of this being Hugo (although Locke and Ben are still my top suggestions). Ooh, good idea about Hugo possibly still having the money! I forgot about that - as you say he could have enough money to pull something like that off. I was thinking that Abbadon's people could've 'helped' him, but I like your idea too. Perhaps Hugo secretly decided to help them (Abaddon's people) find the island or whatever, and didn't want anyone to know it was him so they helped him to fake his own death as part of the deal?) Quote:
"Never say never, man" (Hurley) ..He even decided to call Kate for help - something I don't think he did too often post-island, since she said 'why did you call me?' as if it wasn't something he did on a regular basis. So basically, perhaps the cycle/parallel is that Hugo fulfilled Charlie's dying message..and Jack now feels the need to fulfil Hurley's message..a message he ignored in 4.01's FF. ![]() Quote:

Unlikely though I must admit - since Hugo can barely look after himself ![]()

If it is Hugo then the size of the coffin could be either Hugo lost weight in the time off the island or that the body does shrink when you die.
But why would Kate not go? It can't be Hugo.

Well he was on a plane when he saw the newspaper article, presumably on one of his 'i've been flying a lot' trips where he hoped the plane would crash so that he could 'get back'. Maybe he had realised that Hurley was right but hadn't had a chance to tell him before he died.
