Flashing Desmond
Island Believer
|
Could this be why he is so desperate for the ship never to reach the Island? So desperate for no one to escape?
Perhaps Dharma, or what is left of Dharma on the outside world, know about Ben's homicide of the former Initiative on the Island, and are trying to find Ben to bring him to justice. Ben wouldn't want anyone to leave the Island as they may be found by Real-World Dharma and would tell Dharma where Ben is. Real-World Dharma may have continued to send people to work on the Island i.e. Kelvin, in order to find Ben. I know that Kelvin claimed they were "Hostiles" however he may have already been in contact with Ben and made some kind of deal with him. After all we never found out where Kelvin's body went. This would also explain why Ben is so adamant that no-one should reach the Island, as he fears the consequences of what Dharma may do to him if he is found. It could also bring an explanation if Ben is the one inside the coffin. Dharma may have got hold of him and we see the consequences in that funeral parlour... And so this brings the theory that Ben may not be trying to save the world nor the Island, but actually trying to just save himself ![]()

Much as I readily believe Ben to be one of the most self-interested parties on that island - many of his actions (especially his behaviour regarding Jacob, Locke and the medical-emergency-fuelled kidnapping of the trio) are aimed fully at keeping himself in his privileged position of power, regardless of whether or not that's the best thing for his society - I think in this case there's something broader at stake than Ben's welfare. Though I do think Ben only really got to grips with how much his mine-all-mine/kill-everybody-in-the-whole-world strategy had risked towards the very end, his sudden desperation on realising that he couldn't actually talk round a person he'd terrorised into total mistrust does suggest to me that he's compromised the safety of a pretty vast and important mission, not just his own neck.
Which isn't to say that life in the real world would be any sort of a picnic for Ben - self-interest probably plays a part in it. Not as great a part as it does in Locke's behaviour - I think he would've played the 'You're not supposed to do this' card purely because he didn't want to leave the island, regardless of whether or not he'd learned anything more significant - but yeah, it's probably there nonetheless. |

I agree that Ben doesn't want to leave for selfish reasons, but I wonder who it was that the original dharma wanted, when they arrived to pick up Ben and his Dad, just after his birth. Could he have something that killed his Mother which needed looking into??
They didn't seem too interested in Roger, so maybe Ben was needed for some sort of testing, like Walt. This could fit in with the inability for pregnant women to survive too. Perhaps Ben knows he is safe on the island, like Locke and Rose. |
