Default Is it all one big experiment.

Imo it is just one huge experiment. People are watching the survivors just not from the pearl. They are somewhere which isn't on the island and all the hatches are there to see how people react in different situations. Ana Lucia, Yemi, Christian, etc where all just planted in the survivors minds to help them find certain places on the island. Hanso, Dhama or whoever is carrying out this experiment doesn't care what happens on the island or who dies. The others are just there to help things run a bit smoothly and to see how they all react towards them.

You mean, along the lines of The Truman Show?

still alight?!

I know they looked recent, but i didn't think they were *that* recent!

Out of interest, how long would it take a cigarette to burn down whilst still being alight? Assuming it had been dropped like half-way? I'm not a smoker so i haven't a clue...i'm guessing 5/10 mins?

Maybe the guy went to the toilet! lol!

Takes about 5 mins on average to smoke a cigarette at medium pace, and that's with someone actually toking it, so between 9-15 minutes I reckon!

Were these cigarettes in the Pearl or what? I didn't notice 'em..

Oh, I hope it isn't just a social experiment. That would be lame.

Truman show?

Nah, more like "Big Brother meets Jurassic Park"

Gaaawd that would be awful. Mad scientists are the oldest stereotype in Hollywood. That and consipiracy theories.

Having said that, a lot of the Dharma hatches may well have served for genuine, controlled experiments, once upon a time. But then something bad happend, and now we've got people who don't know whats going on (and who aren't all that curious) operating them. A bit like us using Stonehenge to predict mid winter solstice when in fact it may have had a completely different purpose.

Yeah i'd kinda go along with that part.

IMO it's not just an experiment..some experiments are ongoing and even involve our losties..but i feel there more to it then that. It went beyond the experiment stage many years ago methinks.

I'm not sure about an experiment... but I think there's is someone or something behind it all contorling little things i.e. the dreams and visions.

I think 108 made a good point that maybe it used to be an experiment but then something went awry, but I think that maybe the Pearl hatch is a 'farce' as much as the Swan hatch, in that the Swan hatch orientation video made it seem that the inputting the numbers is the really important thing, and in the Pearl orientation video it made it seem like observing the Swan hatch is the most important job.

Where I'm going with this is that there could easily be a hatch even higher in status which shows the Pearl is as 'unimportant' as the Swan experiment. God only knows what the inhabitants of this hatch would have to do though!
