The question speaks for itself.
These people aren't exactly honest. Naomi parachuted onto the island with a photo of Penelope and Desmond, claiming she worked for Penny, who had a boat just offshore. We know now that Penelope has never heard of Naomi and hasn't situated a boat anywhere near the island. The boat is just offshore and at the end of season 3 Jack had just got in touch with it. Contrary to Jack's belief that the boat is bringing them rescue, Ben seems to think it's beinging them certain death. At the end of season 3 Ben said that if the poeple on the boat reach the island "every living thing on the island will die". So just what do these people want? Are they here to research the islands secrets? Looking for Dharma? Any theories? |

well they're off-shore for a reason. and it cant've originally been for the losties because they never knew the losties were there. so i think they're there for some sort of research.

I wouldn't be surprised if "they" are previous inhabitants of the island (and in my mind were part of the Others) and that they left the island for a reason given to them by Ben and now they are ready to return as planned although Ben didn't actually want them to return. The only thing i can't figure out is what his reasons for them leaving the island would be and why he doesn't want them to return.

i think they are more than likely some big research hoodickies, because i think a lot more people know about the island than just the Others. At the end of season 2 those guys in the snow picked up on the electromagnetic milarky (at least i think that was what it was) and called Penny, which means they must have known what they were looking for. If they knew what to look for then i'm pretty sure others will too.

This is a tough cookie to crack. I think the part we are missing is inbetween the electromagnetic anomally being picked up and told to penny, and where Charlie and Penny communicate. Somewhere there, a 3rd party must have caught wind and set out to find the island for themselfs.
Or, an idea I quite like, there is no boat. Another layer of deciet to observe the habitants of the island. If there is a boat, do you think they will have intercepted Micheal and Walt? Its a fair assumption, as they got off a bit too easily, surely? Ben/Jacob wouldnt give up their special boy like that??

now that would be good back to my theory above - maybe these people are coming to get all those that were kidnapped (Cindy and co) but Ben has since changed his mind I really would like the whole kidnapping storyline to be sewn up rather than just left unanswered and I think the time for explanation is now as surely it can be finished with now |

The boat people have to have some sort of a link to Penny, even if she doesn't know it - they have her photo and they know about Desmond. They also found the coordinates of the island, something we've only seen Penny's people do in the course of the series. The most obvious answer is that they're linked to her via her father and are therefore something to do with Widmore. As to the degree to which they're involved with the overarching plot (the 'plane crash, the coincidences, Desmond's going to that island) ... that's too big a question really. Ben seems to feel he knows who they are, and they seem to know who Desmond is, which suggests that, at the very least, there's more than a coincidental link between Desmond and the island ... that Desmond's arrival on the island was fixed, perhaps as a means of enabling the boat people to locate the island (know that Penny would do everything at her means to track him down - though surely her father's resources are even greater than hers).
At any rate, I very much doubt rescuing the survivors is foremost in their mind .... |
