This is something which I will look to build upon and ocme back to over the course of season 4 (and who knows, 5 and 6..and the Movie
).I have always been intrigued by the prospect of there being an ancient civilisation which still or 'once' existed on the island - their relics and ways of life can still be seen today: ![]() ![]() The Four Toed Statue..perhaps pre-dating the Black Rock, which has been referenced as being an 1800's Slaving ship. My understanding is that each of these civilisations came to the island either by accident or by divine (if you will) intervention. I believe that each phase (civilisation) of island history represents a crucial era in, not only island, but 'world' survival. The current age being no exception.. I believe that the island is quite literally God's garden - plain and simple..it is not special by accident, it is special because it was God's gift to the earth many many years ago. With every gift, however, comes the curse..the temptation of man to misuse the gifts that have been given to him. Throught the ages man has used war to exert power and power to wage war - quite simply, if the island were to fall into the wrong hand's it would be the most powerful and devastating weapon ever seen. My belief is that the Four Toer's died defending the island..an island which was to later be inhabited by Alvar Hanso and the Dharmarites..but of course we shouldn't forget the Black Rockers - I like to think of them as Pirates (seen Pirates of the Caribbean latey?), but in they were probably as Locke said -Slave drivers and slaves (although Pirates they could still be). I am willing to bet that Jacob was either the leader or a member of the Black Rockers..his current state is much to do with his attempts at utilising the Island's power. Richard Alpert's current 'ageless' state is, perhaps, also related to his role in utilising the island's power. They say that the curse is greater than the gift.. My belief is that although Ben has 'contained' Jacob, it is for the greater good - in a way they both need each other.. I realise that I have alot of bases to cover, but my hope is to begin this by highlighting the plethora of 'ages' that has existed on the island. With a possible Neo-Dharma/Widmore about to raid the island I want to start putting together some thoughts on the possible history and future of the island's civilisation. I'll update this with any thoughts which I think will help formulate this as either a theory or further speculation. I will also attempt to fill in all of the gaps that I have left with personal explanations and thoughts.

I believe that the Four Toes (FT's) were an ancient civilisation - perhaps they were human..perhaps the were pre-human..perhaps they were, yes, aliens. Just because Juliet mocked the idea, it doesn't mean that alien life-forms haven't previously exhisted on the island. The thing is, the show doesn't have to delve too far into who or what the Four Toes were (they could save that for the spin-offs)..they merely need to reference them as a civilisation who once inhabited the island to provide padding for the show.
It could even be that the FT's lived on the island within our human life-time. Since the island cannot be seen by the outside world, they may have been living side by side with us for many many years Until their demise/fall from grace (I'm currently undecided about what has become of them).![]() Us humans have the Statue of Liberty, the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Taj Mahal, a multitude of Sky Scrapers...all celebrated icons on our time..our civilisation. It is my view that the FT's celebrated their own 'icons' - the Four Toed Statue is, I believe, a celebration of their kind..or, alternatively it is a celebration of evolution. Man doesn't really need 5 toes..we could cope quite easily with just FOUR. It may well be that the FT's wanted to strip themselves of the 'baggage' that they carry - again, a central theme within LOST. (Eitherway, it may be important to note that the FT's were skilled in the art of craft and construction..) (Furthermore, we should perhaps consider whether just a foot was constructed, or an entire statue..) However, at this moment in time, I will go with my first idea - that the FT's are/were an ancient (perhaps alien) civilisation who once inhabited the island..and like all of the island's inhabitants they eventually came to love and cherish the island..some of them beyond reason. I believe that they either killed each other, or died protecting the island..perhaps they even fought with the Black Rockers and their (possible) leader, Jacob..
