Ok, maybe the title is a bit weird, but I was looking on C4 and saw this, thought it sounded quite plausable... basically, people who are loved, die, and people who aren't live.
Think about it... Charlie found Claire. Libby found Hurley. Ana found Sawyer (sort of). I can't really explain it, here's the original thread... make of it what you will :P Original C4 Thread

Well..
It's an old plot device - usually related to 'scary movies' - where a person will 'get freaky' with someone else, finally, and then soon after meet their maker. In fact, you're usually done for if you've a love interest in a horror/thriller etc It also, in Losts instance, gives each of the characters who have died a sympathy vote: Even if you don't feel sorry for Libby, you can feel sorry for Hugo - likewise Charlie and Claire. It's an old technique, I don't really think there's anything in it. Although it has been brought up before more generally; people who come to a huge realization or completion/content conclusion and then die, but again that's just writing - it'd be foolish killing someone off leaving unanswered questions, dangling plot threads, without the ability to go back and explain the questions (like Libby )Basically, watching someone who doesn't have ties or people who care for them die, isn't as sad as someone who has fell in love, has a connection etc :P

It's possibly more about redemption than anything - once a character has reached the heights (ususally involving love), then their story is often at an end. People don't want to watch too many love stories outside of the main protagnoists (Kate, Ford, Jack) and so this may explain their decision to redeem and then bury such characters.
