Default The Black Rock (literally)

Now, maybe this is nothing, but did anyone see the black rock behind Kate and Jack when Jack was doing the whole 'I'll be right here' shouting thing? My initial thought was 'its a real black rock! thats an amusing visual joke put in by the Lost writers!'

But maybe its the grave of Hanso - marked by a real black rock, and maybe its no coincidence that this is the place where the Losties met the Others?

what think ye?

Yeah i noticed that too. I thought that it 'might' be some subtle reference. They certainly knew what they were doing when putting it there, i feel.

Thats an interesting point about Magnus..perhaps that is his grave..if so i would certainly see the symbolism with it being exactly where the 'line' is..

Interesting..

I saw it too and went through similar thoughts as you pynch.
It stood out quite a lot against the green of the jungle so it seems it was there for a reason, whether its a red herring,a reminder of Bernards SOS made from black rocks, the ship or the grave or something else im not sure but itll probably be worth remembering.

True but surely if it's there for no reason they'd have edited it out or done something to make it less obvious, knowing lost fans would have spotted it and been theorising (sp?) about it?

I tend to agree with lost-lover..it looked far too intentional imo. It might not be a major reference but i do feel that it was placed there to make us think. Especially since it was right near the "line"

It didn't make me think cause I didn't notice. I looked at this thread because I thought this is a discussion about my favourite subject from S1, the ship.

What did it look like? Can we have a screen-cap of this please?

Thank you. That worked. (Whereas it looks most of the smilies have disappeared from this site).

Now what does it mean. Is it maybe just a tongue in cheek thing? Because we haven't seen the ship from S1 in all of S2 (and are not going to because they are saving it for later). And then if someone complains "you haven't shown us the Black Rock in S2" they can say "Yes we have"

Guys, check this out. I just had a brainwave, somehow I remembered that Magnetite is a black mineral that is, well, magnetic.

http://webmineral.com/data/Magnetite.shtml

So, I think this is it. The whole S.O.S. episode is about this. Its not coincidence. They are rubbing it it.

1) The survivors collect black rocks to make the sign
2) Jack and Kate walk past a giant black rock
3) Rose is healed by the mag(net)ic island
4) The faith healer talks about having his hut on a "hot spot" (I don't recall if he said it was very strongly magnetic)

And Magnus Hanso arrived on this island in a ship called the Black Rock.

And then there is the strong magnetism in the hatch that was discovered earlier but never again talked about.

Am I on to something?

Seeing as most things in lost have a double meaning (magnetism, the numbers etc.) and more often than not small hard-to-notice things seem to crop up again in a bigger light in later episodes the black rock (both the ship and the actual rock) could end up making a second appearence sometime soon, but we'll have to wait and see.

I think you're onto something there, 108 - nothing is accidental on this island....
