Default What was "Henry Gales" job when he got caught?

Now this is not new of course, we have been over this. Still. I don't think we really know what "Henry" was up to when Danielle caught him.

When he read the book by Dostojevski, he said something like "whats the difference between a martyr and a prophet". Assuming he was thinking of the role he was playing at that moment, could it be he was on a mission to prove himself to his people? What I mean is, maybe he wasn't any kind of leader at all before he went on that mission. Maybe he earned himself this promotion after going through with everything, the torture, the death threats and so on.

So what did he achieve, in the end? Nothing, actually, if you think about it. So Ana-Lucia is dead (presumably thats good in his view) but its not like he had anything to do with that, except of course it happened when he got freed. The hatch is destroyed, partly because he got Locke to doubt, but not only, the discovery of the pearl was at least as significant.

So its either his mission objectives have not been met (which should really earn him a demotion) or as I said above, being in peril and to live through it was the only point.

Indeed it's a very good question. Henry said once that his objective was to get John, but kidnapping Jack, Kate and Sawyer seems to go againest that. The other thing he achieved was making Locke lose faith possibly you could argue that lead onto the destruction of that hatch, maybe that was Henry's goal. Possibly they just needed more info on the hatch or the losties themselves?

It's possible he got caught by accident but so far we have never seen the i others on their own apart from Ethan and Goodwin but they were spies. Bar them the smallest lot of others we've seen is two (stalking the losties in LTDA). This would make Henrys capture most out of character.

Maybe he was always a top commanding officer in the others ranks, and maybe he had a certain skill that he needed to complete his mission.

What worries me most about him is how damn clever and cultured he was.

Good idea and i like the lateral thining..however i tend to think that Fenry was already a 'big-shot' as it were, because when we see him in 2x24 he walks with such authority and confidence..also he scolds Zeke for removing his beard almost as if he's had to tell him off on other occasions. Also, he speaks to Mike in a way which suggests that he is the one in charge of the ground troops - "Im not hapy with the arrangement thats been made."

But hey, you could still be right..i just see it differently at present.

Personally i think the whole martyrs and prophets line was quite relevent (i made a thread on it somewhere). I reckon that he was just using this as a device to get inside Jack (and Locke's) head. I think his mission was always do meddle (or mould?) the relationship between these two leaders.. This, i believe, is what he achieved. He almost succeeded in crushing Locke's faith (in the button) and he effectively made a leader out of Jack. Also, notice Fenry's face light-up when he first see's Jack in the hatch...it says alot methinks.

Anyway, i still suspect Rousseua in the whole Fenry getting caught thing. I mean, why would she give him to the losties after apparently not seeing any of them despite being on the island for 16 years? Shouldnt she have been more taken aback? frightened? unsure? ..like she was when she caught Sayid.. In fact i wouldnt be suprised if she knows them only too well..or if they brokered somekind of deal with her to get him into their camp. Afterall, how could he be certian that she'd give him to them otherwise.

To summise, i think Fenry was always the leader (though not THE leader..not HIM)..but afterall several of his trusted soldiers had fallen (Ethan, Goodwin etc) he decided to go in himself..afterall, 'if you want something done properly..............'
