That was a great response by Eko becasue it highlighted the madness of Jack's potential actions - to go out there guns ablazing, giving a gun to an untrained man [Michael] couldve and probably wouldve been very disasterous! He could well have ended up killing Ana-Lucia because he thought she was an other or something and then he wouldve regretted it. It also showed that Eko had learned from his past mistakes with guns etc.
