I read that they were planning to nominate him for an Oscar (possibily for Best supporting Actor) but if he was a nomminee would he win simply out of sympathy?
Hollywood is like that - like support for a fallen comrade. Lets vote him the Oscar. I feel a 'Hall of Fame' Oscar would be more approprate or 'Life time Achievement'. Has a dead actor ever won a 'proper' award before?

I think if he deserves to win it, then yes he should be nominated - can't really say so until I've seen the movie though.
As for whether he'd win because of sympathy - I'm not sure, but if I was a Heath Fan (and ignoring Brokeback for a minute here, I can't say I really am) I'd be offended if people only voted for him because he had passed on. I'm sure Heath would be too. But no, if he deserves a nomi he should be in the running. Making an issue of exempting him from nomination (assuming his performance is worthy) is just as bad, if not more so, than giving him the sympathy vote.

I have not seen his performance yet but if it is as good - great - as everyone says it is then he should be nominated and if he wins, it will be because his performance was amazing. Of course bias may come into it but less we forget there is bias in everything, especially the Oscars.
The Oscars seem tailored to certain movies, certain actors and performances and what have you so I would certainly not be offended if Heath won out of sympathy. I think we need to imagine whether his performances would still be praised if he was still alive - in which case from the reviews I have read the praise would remain.

Heaths performance looks brilliant , and If he hadn't have died I doubt this performance would be considered as The academy seems to ignore any film of that genre. I think now that Heath has passed away people are realising what a great actor he was , and The Joker seems to be him in his finest hour ( his character in Brokeback Mountain wasn't particuarly glorified) I think he definately deserves it if not in recognition of his past work .

That is precisely what annoys me about the Oscars.

The only genres they ever consider are Romantic Drama's , Smart Thrillers , Offbeat Indy Comedies, Musicals and the odd Exceptions.

I think they surely have to consider Batman if it is as good as it is supposed to be, in spite of their bias toward movie nominations. From what I hear, the movie itself SHOULD be up for nominations.

Yeah, The Oscars usually ignore Blockbusters - in general - for the more prestigious awards (Best Male/Female Performance in a Leading/Supporting Role, Best Picture and so on) usually because they're the films that require the least amount of range from an actor.
I loved Iron Man - and Downey Jr.'s performance was awesomely perfect for Stark - but was it Oscar worthy? Did it stretch his acting ability? (Good) Blockbuster performances tend to be down to good casting rather than a specifically good performance. Although I think the Oscars are anything but great, I do side with them on that issue.. That said, Dark Knight seems to promise a more Action-Thriller movie than out and out Action, so I do expect more from it when compared to your average blockbuster...

Hmm... I immediately thought 'Sympathy Nomination' as soon as I heard about this, but like EPU said if he does deserve it it would be just as bad if they didn't give him it because he had died...and stuff.
I suppose I can't comment until I've seen the movie, but the Joker is an intense character to play and Heath never played a character like him before. If he pulled it off then he more than deserves one ![]()
