True but if they are just a medical group who stumbled across a hatch why had they deserted it by the time Claire returned with Kate and Danielle?

Remember Ethan came back after a while and he was WAAAY desperate to get Claire back. Maybe they were like
"Orite Ethan, get Claire back, or I'll eat you!"
"Ok Mr Him!"

Then when he died they were quite cheesed off, so they decided to leave that hatch and go some place else so they could kidnap Walt instead.

They left because Rousseau warned them Claire was coming
