Reason For Being On Flight 815: Bringing his son Walt back to New York, he had previously lost custody of Walt after giving up on a court case due to his financial instability. Walt's mother Susan shacked up with her boss Bryan Porter and they moved from country to country, in Australia she got sick and died. Bryan relinquished Walt (despite being his adoptive parent) to Michael claiming there was something weird about him and that things happen when hes around.
