ML: the "doctors"

I was looking back at some of the screen captures from Maternity Leave, and I noticed this one. It's the brief glimpse Claire gets in flashback of the surgical team getting ready to do - whatever it was they were going to do before Alex rescued her.



Notice how they are all wearing glasses so we can't get a clear look at their faces. It makes them look sinister and prevents Claire from identifying them later - hardly something they'd bother with if they were going to kill her. Unless they all have poor eyesight?

We know the Others like to play dress up. Also, we now know that the Others' medical expertise is rather sketchy. They look more like people trying to look busy than people genuinely preparing for surgery/whatever. And the man sitting on the bed looks very uneasy. Just what is going on here?

This shot makes me more convinced than ever that Claire's escape was staged, and that Alex was doing the Others' bidding when she released her - whether she knew it or not.

Hmm, that's a good point, Alex did say that they were going to kill her anyway. I still think Alex didn't mean to help the others, I reckon she's against them. Or at least resents them.

But that raises the question what was Alex doing there? I have always thought they keep her somewhere (not of her own choice) - Ben/Pickett said somthing about her being home (a home on the island I mean) Maybe this is in the compound. She obviously wasn't supposed to be on the hydra island, but still seems to have some fredom in where she goes, twice she managed to get to where Sawyer and Kate were working - so maybe she lives near there. I read somwhere in here that the compound was on the Losties island, but this suggests otherwise.

So maybe she was taken there by the others and they knew that she would save Claire.


But still, why go to all that bother to capture Claire - even killing a person - just to let her escape again? Right enough, they didn't attempt to re-capture her - so this does back up the idea that they wanted her to escape.

Perhaps they were doing as instructed by him, but knew that none of them were up to the job of operating. So used Alex as a sort of scape goat? So that they could say they tried, but she escaped.

The more I think about it, the more it seems like they were never going to operate in the first place. I'm still undecided though - they did go to a lot of bother, and Claire wasn't guaranteed to see them in there.

Interesting points CG...

Although the wearing of glasses and surgical masks could just be for hygenic reasons as they planed to operate on Claire. Maybe they really didn't care about Claire's well being, but I think that they cared an awful lot about her childs', and so they just dressed up like any well prepared surgeon/doctor would do in order to reduce the chance of infections etc being passed to Claire's baby.

I do agree that the Others' medical skills/equipment isn't of the highest standards, so maybe they just wanted to do the best with the limited resources they had, hence the wearing of masks and glasses to take as much care with the baby as they could.

It is an interesting theory that Claire's escape was staged, but I don't think that it was, and that Alex is genuinely working against Ben and co as much as she can.

Interesting points, but I don't think it was staged. After all Ethan et al had convinced Claire into giving up her child willingly - and she was even trying to get back to them until Dani plonked her one lol

If anything; it does beg the question where have these people gone now? I mean, it would seem the only person with medical experience is Juliet...? And even that is basic/maternity stuff

Personally i think the masks are becasue of casting issues. They didn't know who they would cast as Juliet and the rest of the others so they covered their faces so later they could (possibly) claim Juliet or someone else we know now was there.

Yes, I agree that casting issues play a part. However, I expect they must have an in-series excuse as to why all these people need glasses. That's not standard medical practise is it?

Yeah it is incase blood squirts in the eyes. Can be incredibly dangerous if the surgeon can't see what they are doing.

lol, no I'm not a pshychology student, but I am a student who has been writing too many research papers lately

I agree there is probably a casting issue involved and that we'll get some kind of 'in series' explaination...

In my opinion the set up in the Medical hatch was a temp one. I don't think it's any coincidence that with a monster roaming around on top that the hatches are all underground - and the 'others' seem to base themself more on the other island..

My 2 questions regarding this are...

- Where are all these 'doctors' now? Perhaps they're all maternity doctors, but wait a sec; 4 materinty doctors/nurses and no other type of doctor, i.e. physician
- Working out roughly the time between when Claire returned from the 'others' and when she eventually got back; how did the 'others' manage to get all their equipment through the jungle, and fall back? Somehow I can't imagine them wheeling all their stuff through the jungle unless, they know something about the black smoke, that we do not OR have some kind of influence over it (I don't think this is the case though)

I think the others havnt been living on otherville since the plane crash as in maternity leave they were all in the medical hatch whilst claire was there and then in 3 minutes they were pretending to live in those shck things by the sea when Michael was there and now in the third series they seem to be all living on the Hydra Island. So they probably would have taken Alex with them. One problem with this though is that when we saw the medical hatch in Maternity Leave there didnt seem enough room for the others to live there. I hope that in some point durring Series 3 we get an others flashback so we can see what theyve been doing since the losties arrived on the the Island.

That's a very good point. Now that I think of it, you are right, they have been away from othersville alot.

I don't really know what else to say because I agree, and can't see any onther way to expand

But I am hoping for an other's flashback.

I wouldnt put it past Alex to have been part of a ploy to make Claire think she was helping her..but then that would/could also implicate Rousseau

Hmm, it's something to mull over..and we know that the Others are prepared to go to elaborate lengths to fool the losties. The thing is though, is Rousseau with them? I wouldnt rule it out because i still think its possible that she and Ben planned the whole net capture..

Yeah I've seen that mentioned a few times before; I'm not sure myself. One thing about that guy though, he's looking straight down at Claire and Alex. And he doesn't seem to be doing anything...
