Six Appeal?
Six Appeal?

Default Six Appeal?

The longevity of six of our Losties will really be tested over the course of the next few seasons - the Oceanic Six were not only given Oceanic golden passes, but a free pass into the final knockings of this amazing show.

But with this gift, therein lies a burden - the powers that be will have to find a way to keep these characters interesting. Faraday has already confirmed that "the future cannot be changed" - which also means that the sneak-peaks into the futures of the Oceanic 6 are pretty much set in stone. This includes the much maligned Jack and Kate who we know survive til' (at least) 2007 - the possible end year for the show.

From my own perspective I can't see how Kate (or Jack for that matter) can be kept interesting, even with the new flash-forward mechanism. Assuming that the powers that be aren't messing with the canon of the flash-forwards, they will really have to go some to repay our investment in the show and it's central characters.

By the way Dalton, this type of stunt won't be enough:

What about Sun? Why haven't you mentioned her? She's only going to remain interesting as long as Jin's around, and really it's not her who's interesting, it's Jin

Faraday's 'The future can't be changed' thing isn't nessecarily true. I mean, it's not as if he's 100% on everything that ever happens in the world. I still personally think he's wrong, and that it will be changed. I mean, Desmond proved that it could be, by saving Charlie on countless occasions (fair enough he was meant to die anyway, but at least he changed the way )

Kate was only interesting in S1 when she at least went on missions for reasons other than whining 'we've got to save Jack!1!11!' In S3 she was just a part of the tedious triangle, and in S4 she still messed about with Sawyer when she wasn't going behind people's backs for purely selfish reasons. Her off-island story was concluded poorly in my view, since how on earth would she not get a prison sentence for all that she's done?

Unfortunately Kate will survive because the Aaron storyline will have to be explained and developed, and because she's our 'lead' female character.

I have no time for Jack either and think he's just as boring, and I really couldn't care less what happens to him off-island. If he wants to get back to the Island fair enough that's his problem, but there's always the danger the awful Jate storyline will be dragged on for as long as Jack and Kate live...

That's quite possible. Although i focused on Jack and Kate I'm including all 'six' in this, and agree that the likes of Sun will also struggle to remain interesting (although Ji Yeon 'could' spice her up a bit).

Very good shout - I also think that he could be wrong, even if his statement seems like a way to canonise TPTB's own verdict on the matter.

The thing is, they've told us this through Faraday, yet at the very same time they drop bombs like 'VALIS' on us..so what and who to believe? It always seems to boil down to faith versus fate doesn't it.

However, if the did find a way to alter the future, then the flash forwards that we've seen could become redundant and could lead to many fans feeling 'cheated'. It will be an interesting aspect to watch.

Just on the Desmond saving Charlie thing - it's explained by 'course correction'. The future was still set..that is to say, Charlie still died..eventually via the Universe course correcting. The notion, I believe, is that although it's possible for an individual to delay future events by changing it in the short term..they are only changing the 'space' between fate. They can alter it slightly and even prolong it, but the Universe will ultimately have it's way.

I think this is interesting because, as you point out, this prolonging or altering is still a 'change' in the future..even if the Universe eventually finds a way to defeat the 'player', the player is still able to 'cheat' in the short-term.

I think for the future to be 'truly' unset, then the players that be, will have to find a way to manipulate time so that the Universe is operating on a slowed-down version. As we know with Faraday's payload, it's quite possible to alter 'peoples' perception of time.....if the Universe' perception of time is altered then the Universe is screwed IMHO
