Default Who Shot Rousseau!?

The frenzied cliff-hanger which saw the apparent assasinations of both Karl and Rousseau was one of the biggest 'OMG' moments of this curtailed fourth season.

Alex, Karl and Rousseau having been sent to the "sanctuary" (The Temple) by Ben, are met by snipper bullets as Karl, then Rousseau are gunned down in this shocking scene.

But the question on mine, and everyones lips is; WHO?

Who killed Karl and Rousseau?

In my mind there are 3 main possibilities:

1. Ben planned the whole thing - somehow he knew that Karl and Rousseau would run into danger, meaning that Alex would need her father once more OR Ben pre-arranged for Alpert and the Others to gun down Rousseau and Karl for the same reasons as already stated, as well as the fact that Alex could well be pregnant by Karl - so if 'Room 23' was "overreacting", this would make this incident revenge.

How Ben would pull off such a feat is not important - what's important is that we know he CAN achieve such results - he did it with bringing Cooper to the island and in arranging for Harper to visit Juliet, not to mention Miles seems certain that Ben is a man who gets what he wants. It's possible that Ben is able to see 'flashes' or that he is able to 'magic-box' his will?

2. Perhaps the most likely possibility is that the Freighties gunned down Rousseau and Karl - we know that Frank and Keamy were on their way to the island to run an "errand":

Keamy: "Don't be late (Frank)"

Then in a later scene;

Desmond: "Have they gone to the island?"

Ray: "You know anywhere else nearby that they can land?"

So these two quotes prove that Keamy, Frank and possibly a couple of the other Freighties left for the island on assignment to capture Ben and kill all who got in their way. In "Meet Kevin Johnson", we also saw Keamy taking shooting practice - so we know that he's a decent shot from range.

3. My outside bet is that someone else (Dharma?) shot Rousseau and Karl, but this is a tentative idea since this season has done a good job at making us think Dharma have RIPed.

I guess what we have to consider is that this is a war - Ben alluded to the idea himself, that in every war there are those who are innocent, those who get caught in the cross fire. Rousseau and Karl were seemingly collateral damage..however, the jury is still out on whether they were sent to their deaths in much the same way that some quarters believe Goodwin was.

Personally I think Keamy and co were the shooters, and that Ben's motives were sincere, but don't you just love how every Ben talking point comes ready made with layers?

I've been trying to get a screencap of the shooter and I managed to slow down my video-player to capture him/her - it's not clear, but below you'll just about make-out one of the shooters head and shoulders/back. my first thought was that it was Miles because s/he seems to be wearing dark clothing like Miles was wearing..however it could just as easily be Keamy or Omar..or Alpert, for that matter:

Whoever it is they're very sneaky and don't want to be seen. Although i'm sure we'll find out just who they are in, oh, 4 long and LOST-less weeks.

*sigh*

I agree that it's likely to be either options 1 or 2 - I think I'd be disappointed if it was a completely unknown party at this stage. Both of your first two options have a lot going for them. Ben has a clear motive and there were a lot of dramatic pointers to its being him, such as the fact that he even allowed Rousseau to go to a place that was apparently reserved only for the others and Karl's worrying about Ben's motives just before he got shot. But those could be red herrings. And Frank's been absent in the copter for an episode now with no known motivation, which makes him a key suspect - working against that is the fact that Frank otherwise seems to have been set up as one of Ben's labelled 'innocents' in 4.08, and I frankly would be surprised to see him carrying out that sort of a mission ... his motivation seems to be about finding information about and justice for the 'plane crash victims. So I think it's more or less 50/50 at this stage.

Whoever it is though, I hate them.

(PS. What forum is this in? I can't see the 4.08 forum but I can see this post ... I'm wondering if it's an exception.) - EDIT. Never mind. Problem fixed.

I think it may be Frank as hes labelled up to now as a good guy but this could be a smokescreen or by killing others he thinks hes helping the losties.

Keemy is my prime suspect but maybe its too obvious its him as we saw him shoot the rifle out at sea.

Ben may have contacted Richard or Aldo (lol) and got them to shoot Karl and Danielle for him as he got to Juliet remember to kill Daniel/charoltte so anythings possible.

I also hope its not somebody new as that would be annoying at this stage.

Yeah, If the Freighties are involved then Frank is definately a part of it - he looked very sheepish and unwilling when Keamy told him not to be late in "Ji Yeon". I'm thinking that he was against what they were going to do (capture Ben/kill people) but knew that he was the only chopper pilot able to fly them (Keamy, Omar etc?) to the island. I think the actual snipering has to be Keamy/Omar however - seems like that's what they were specficially hired for - especially considering how he looked down upon 'deckhand' Michael. Keamy and Omar appear to be the 'military' division of Widmore's bounty hunters.

On closer inspection the guy in the bushes does appear to have black hair - which could well point to Alpert. It also seems that the powers that be went to some effort to place an actual person in the bushes, when they needn't have - so this easteregg seems like a pointer of somesort, rather than just being a random inclusion.

On that basis brunette-haired Alpert (and a squad of Others) seems to be the most logical candidate, as Keamy has brown hair and I think Omar has a different hairstyle than the man in this screenshot. Although I'm still thinking that it is the Freighties who are the snipers - so pick the logic out of that!

I would think Alpert - Cane (the show the actor Carbonel was in) has finished, so he should be available for filming now.

Although I get the sense that there were 3 or 4 of em, so perhaps some of the other Others helped out.

Imagine Cindy with a gun

Of course I ultimately believe that it's Keamy and the boys though - helicopter carries 6 including the pilot, so there are probably 5 shooters, not including Frank.

Well Alpert was my first thought so I dismissed him as being too obvious. I am more inclinded to believe its one of the Others than someone from the freighter
