Does it strike you as odd that the Losties haven't wondered where the food drop came from, or who sent it, or why?
It obviously implies some contact with the outside world. Surely they must realise that some kind of aircraft does come over now anf then? |

When Sawyer, Charlie, Jin etc went to investigate it they did seem genuinely intrigued and Charlie even questioned whether anyone saw a plane flying over.
I think that since they found the hatch they have accepted the likelyhood that the island has or had some links to the outside world..but to be honest i think alot of them are still in denial when it comes down to it.

Perhaps a lot of them are just grateful for the extra food, and aren't really too fussed about where it came from. It's the wrong attitude to take I think, but maybe if you were in their situation you would be more relieved rather than curious.
I wouldn't be surprised if the balloon/food drop is never mentioned again, like the stones Jack found back in S1, or the Adam and Eve skeletons they found.

There are lots of things they don't seem to be discussing, on screen at least.
I mean, this event would not make for interesting dialog, beyond that brief comment. Charlie: "did you see a plane?" Kate: "no I did not see a plane" Jack: "me neither" Sawyer: "nope" Hurley: "no, but I saw a bold man in pyjamas" .... On several occasions a character knew about an event they haven't been in, and I don't recall a conversation. For example Jack knowns that Ana killed Goodwin, and that she was a cop. So they kind of talk, but off screen. And of course, they famously don't talk about important things. Locke hasn't told anybody (alive) he was once in a wheelchair. The girls haven't told anyone they found another hatch.

OK, so maybe this is what links them all together, and why these particular people were brought to the island - they don't communicate!
Now I just have to figure out what kind of organisation needs people who know how to keep their moouths shut, beyond all reason. They could be ex-STASI, I suppose. Hitchcock used to say drama was life with the dull bits taken out, so maybe the lack of discussion doesn't bother me that much after all. Still, who helped Sawyer to find out where Locke was hiding the guns? Eh? |

Indeed, they don't know Sawyer had help, and they don't know Charlie attacked Sun. Now that is in his best interest, cause Jin knows a thing or two about teaching people a lesson

And Kate was prepared to believe that it was Ana Lucia who attacked Sun, so she at least is capable of realising it was one of the Losties, not one of the Others. Maybe they're drugged! |

I'm currently watching 'S.O.S.' (episode whatever) and
HOORAY FOR BERNARD!! He's telling everyone the food pallet must have come from a plane, so let's build an SOS sign! (OK, it might not have come from a plane, but whether it did or not, there's no reason NOT to build an SOS sign). |

Looks like there is a reason to stop after all!
Tha magical healing island has struck again, thought it was good how they added that part with Rose seeing Locke at the airport in a wheelchair, and Locke seeing her medicine.. |

Only for Locke and Rose, probably Jin if he ever wants another child (and Sun is telling the truth) (and Sun's doctor told her the truth).
For everyone else, there's no reason not to build an SOS sign. It might not work, but so what? You'd be no worse off, just a bit tired from the effort. If it does work, you're saved! Even for people who want to stay on the island, it's still worth attracting attention, because you could get some help from the outside world even if you don't want to leave. If you don't build it, and a plane flies over, you get neither rescue nor assistance. That's the logic of it anyway. |

Also there's the added bonus of having something to do. They aren't exactly high on entertaining distractions there. Having a purpose even if it doesn't work must count for something.

No-one really seemed bothered to help Bernard at all in S.O.S. Which i found a bit odd, but I'm sure there's a reason for it. And when Rose told him the Island healed her, and he said that he wanted to stay there with her forever (well, not forever, but until they die naturally I guess!) and since Bernard was the only one left building it at the end when she told him, it doesn't look like it'll be done!
Bit curious as to why no other losties were more enthusiastic, though. |

Good point there, hadn't thought about that. Why does everyone else want to stay so badly they can't be bothered with a days work of carrying rocks, and chose instead to build a church and stuff.
So maybe there are some more medical miracles we haven't yet heard about. And of course they survived the crash, which is probably a mega-scale medical miracle but they don't know that do they.

Yeah, if any of them decide to start making an SOS sign, can't see why they'd change their minds. Even if Bernard was being a colossal pain, it's still in their own interest to get the job done.
That said, I've got 15 years work experience of managers making dumb decisions that screw everything up for the sake of preserving their own self-esteem. Ditto ten years of relationships - but don't get me started! ![]() |
