Viewers disappear as 'Lost' mysteries remain

The second season finale of Lost scooped an average 16% audience share and a peak of 3.2 million viewers on Wednesday night, according to early figures.

The first hour of the two-part special averaged 2.9 million viewers, 200,000 above the slot average, at 10pm - but ratings began to drop off an hour later. The second hourmanaged an average of 2.5 million and a 26.5% audience share, with only 2 million hanging on for the climax at 11.45pm

Another US import, Five's CSI: Miami, which aired at 9pm, performed just as well with 2.9 million viewers and a 12.8% audience share. When up against Lost, the following show CSI: NY held up well, managing 2.2 million viewers.

ITV's coverage of Manchester United's Champions League win over Benfica between 7.30pm and 10pm attracted 4.7 million (21.3%), peaking at 9pm with 5.4 million (23.9%).

But it was BBC One that really held its own during the primetime slot. Eastenders at 7.30pm pulled in more than the football, with 8.7 million (43%). Holby City at 8pm continued to keep viewers from switching with 6.6 million (29.9%), and Whistleblower finished the job at 9pm with 3.8 million (17%).

Maybe if the finale had been shown in June and before the DVD set came out things may have been different. Maybe C4 will learn a lesson - doubt it.

2 million at the end? God, I hope those people were not dissapointed with it, otheriwse the ratings for season 3 could diminish

2 million is rubbish when you consider that is E4 viewers as well!!

It is worrying becuase it will put potential buyers of season three off unless they start it earlier of course.

I mean why stick that trash Desperate Housewifes on first anyway!! - Lost appeals to a wider audience you'd think!

careful Original there are some Desperate Housewifes fans amoung us including one that fancies Teri Hatcher. Shes a step up from MR though

I think we may have witness the last of the Channel 4/Lost partnership! Thank God too! :P If another network gets it then we have a better chance of seeing S3 sooner rather than later!

Personally, I used to watch E4 on Sundays, I'm sure the 22:00 slot on Tuesday just is too late for many people. You have to add the viewing figures of the C4 repeats on Sundays to those of Tuesday night to get a fair picture.

But I still think that if C4 had bought season 3 then they would have said "And Lost returns next year" but they said nothing which suggests, like Roco said, C4 won't bother.

BBC won't touch US dramas

My guess would be.....drum roll....Channel Five!!

They are having two new channels - one called US Five which will have US dramas like Prison Break on it and stuff.

Five are a good channel for US shows. As long as V05 doesn't sponsor Lost.

Yeah, there was no announcement or even a mention of it. Remember when Prison Break ended on CH5 a few months back - they mentioned that it would be back on Ch5 in January 07.
