Default The Boat and all that

Now I'm not really an expert on boats but didn't someone previously say (on the show) that the boat Michael and Walt went to their freedom in could only go a small distance from the shore...?

Therefore how would they be able to go for long enough to get anywhere meaningful?

And also, even if the boat would have enough power to get them to safety, wouldn't Ben and the others just not put enough boat petrol in so that Michael and Walt would just be left floating in the ocean somewhere.... maybe this is what happened What the heck are boats powered on? There's a propeller and stuff, but what is that powered by?

Default RE: The Boat and all that

You're right, it's quite possible that Ben and the Others intentionally didn't fill the tank up (I believe that boat was powered by petrol) so that Michael and Walt ended up stranded, never to see the outside world or the island again (or as you said, end up like Des and float around in circles..until they starve to death!).

However I do believe Ben was being truthful when he allowed Michael to go home - that's not to say that that's where Mike/Walt ended up, since Naomi's people have somewhat clouded that arc, imo.

I think the idea was for Mike/Walt to follow "bearing 325" which would presumably lead them to a certain point - perhaps where the Other's submarine dock's whenever they need to get to "Portland" (since I assume they have a private/rogue port somewhere). I think Bearing 325 is a safe bearing to the outside world were they would become visible again and potentially get rescued..or unbenownst to Ben, get picked up by rogue frieghterites, of course?

I guess this could turn out a bit like Ben's "magic box" metaphor, which he used to describe Locke's intervention in blowing up the Sub and preventing Jack and Jules from leaving the island..only such an intervention (by the frieghterites??) would not be a desirable outcome for Mr. Linus

Of course they might not have been picked-up and could be at home reading Bad Twin and drinking ovaltine! I just hope that they do actually resolve the Mike/Walt storyline at some point!

Ah, petrol! The word I feared to say so much :P

You see I would agree with you, but Ben refused to let Juliet leave the island when she requested, though I suppose this was because she was part of his team and he needed her. And I suppose he was going to let Jack leave, though Jack had significantly helped Ben by removing his tumour. I suppose Michael had also helped by bringing Jack, Sawyer, Hurley and Kate to the others and it seems the others were eager to get rid of Walt so I suppose that could be a worthy reason to let them leave.

Yeah I think Michael will be back at some point, don't know about Walt though, that kid got big!

Yeah, I think you hit the nail on the head - Juliet was desperately needed by Ben for the fertility thing. If Ben's subconscious (killing his own mother at birth) has caused the island's "magic box" to manifest fertility blockages, then I can sympathise with Ben's desire to resolve the fertility issues and hold on to Juliet. As they say 'daddy issues' have affected all of our Losties..and Rogers abuse (telling young Ben that he was to blame for Emily's death and his unhappyness) certainly helped shape Ben. Ironic then, that he told Locke was he need to do to "be free" (i.e. kill Cooper), yet presumably, Ben still isn't free from Roger..least not subconsciously - which, perhaps, means more than anything on this island which 'heightens' the subconscious..

As you say, I guess it comes down to who Ben needs. There's all this stuff about "lists" and stuff, and so it kinda makes sense that there are those who are needed more than others - be it by Jacob..or Ben. I think that Mike had played his role in setting Ben free..and Walt had been "more than we bargained for", so I guess there was no great need to keep them on the island - in this respect I do genuinely believe that Ben has a heart. He doesn't do anything for the sake of it - that is, he's not a tyrant, he's not heartless.

Of course, we could have a situation where (as you also pointed out earlier) Ben lied and Mike and Walt are not home and Ben (or Jacob) are not really done with Walt.

I hope so - the door is certainly open for both of them to return..and Walt kinda did back in TLG - although it was probably 'island Walt' who helped Locke from his pit of despair.

True, he has done grown!:P Perhaps useful if ever TPTB plan to reinforce the islands time anomalies..or use him in flash-forwards..?

Yeah, but it's always risky letting people leave the island, even if Ben does say that Mike will never be able to find the island again after he leaves. The more people who know about the island in the normal world, the more chance there is of someone finding it...

Yeah I was thinking that they could blame Walt's abnormally quick growth on the island, but then again when he left the island he was still normal size :P

True, and I would totally agree with you, it's just that from what we saw in 3.23's flash-forward, both J+K have left the island and it would appear that if they told anyone they would think they were barmy:P Perhaps Ben was of the opinion that no-one would believe Mike if he did tell people exactly what happened? Oh, and didn't Ben threaten Mike that if he told then everyone would know what he did..or something?

Yeah he did, but that wouldn't necessarily happen, Michael could always lie, he's used to that anyway :P Or do you mean that when the island was found, someone would reveal what Michael did?

True:P ..But yeah I think what Ben meant was that if the island was found (because of Mike spilling the beans) then Ben or whoever would spill the beans on what he did (i.e. murder Libby and Ana) I think that's what he meant anyway..our Ben has a habbit of talking in riddles
