I was thinking about the Desmond and Jack stadium scene when a related idea came to me about the other characters.
A major theme (if not a key one) in Lost is that the characters run, they run away from their problems and they run to try and find something better, some life that appears more adequate than the one they already have. I’ve been wondering why on earth the Others decided that it would be Sawyer, Kate and Jack they would kidnap and I was thinking that these are the three characters that ‘run’ the most. Kate has been running for years from the police and won’t settle down on the island. She said back in season one something along the lines of “I can’t be Eve” when Jack suggested moving to the caves. Jack has a consuming desire to run from what is expected of him (for instance, in White Rabbit) and Sawyer runs to find the Original Sawyer, chasing after him with an apparent view that finding him, getting revenge, will lead to a better life and will help him to find peace, perhaps even morph back into James Ford. So, did the Others take these three because they run? The Others seem to have created their own community and the castaways can’t achieve this when they have high-profile members who have tendencies to run. So perhaps the Others are teaching them how not to run, or are going to confront them with the things that they run from so that they stop doing so.

I'm just wondering why they wanted Hurley?
Perhaps it was to try and make him lose a bit of weight lol but great theory!

I assumed it was because Hurley is the most passive castaway, and the least likely to pull some heroic stunt when they told him to go back and tell the other castaways not to go and save Jack, Kate and Sawyer.

I agree with you regarding one of the key themes of Lost is the characters tendancy to 'run' from their past, their future and their problems etc..
I also agree that Kate tendacy to 'run away' has perhaps been to most focused on so far. However im not sure this is the reason why the others took those 3. I mean what about Claire? It could be argued that she wanted to 'run away' by having Aaron adopted etc. Simialrly with Sun..she was planning to run away from Jin.. So whilst i personaly agree with this being one of the most prominent themes of Lost..im not too sure that this is the others motivation for taking Sawyer, Jackk and Kate. But it's worth thinking about, imo ![]()

What strikes me with Claire and Sun though is that they both stopped running before the Others took Sawyer, Jack and Kate.
Claire has settled down into motherhood and now clearly wants to keep Aaron alongside her (such as the drama with Rousseau in Exodus shows) and Sun has settled down with Jin after having the desire to run before their relationship went sour. Its also reminded me of when they took Walt after he ran on the raft in Exodus. It always seemed strange that they chose to kidnap him then when they could have taken him at any point after the crash but when he ran, he forced their hand.

Good points made by everyone.
Pluribus, those are good points too, but where is Hurley's father, Sayid's father, Charlies father, Claires? etc. There is certainly a father issue but I'm not sure that Jack, Sawyer and Kate are the only ones who are now fatherless. |

I think this is an interesting theory AP. There is a recurring theme with these three characters. With regards to the the point made about Hurley I think the demise of Dave was his way of stopping running and that ties into him being the one the others let go. He used Dave as a way to run away from reality and in letting go of Dave I think he has finally faced up to his problems and is trying to resolve them. I just hope Libby's death doesn't make him regress.

I really like this idea.
That the other's are gonna help Sawyer, Jack and Her. Jack, he needs to stop running from the fact that his father died because of him - he did not, and that he has a hero complex that he seems to fail. He needs to learn how to let go, and how to be proud of himslef, even if he is to fail. Sawyer. he needs to stop running from James Ford. He has that heart deep down inside and needs to let it find him again. Just like Jack, he needs to let go of the past, but I don't know if he ever will. But I think he needs to still try and move on. He's getting better though. And Kate. Well, she just needs to turn herself in. I hope that they do start to confront these fears next season, it would make me happy, especially if Sawyer allowed the James within to shine through.
