Just who is Libby??!!

Sorry I have a habit of posting in the wrong threads today. I'll copy over what I posted in the Ep18 thread:

Couple of questions I've been pondering.

Why was Libby in the mental institute? Is she really ill or was she there as a plant to get at Hurley? I mean she was really staring at Hurley and she obviously knew him, and she must have recognised him on the island, I remember how she skirted around Hurleys questions in a previous episode. So if she was in there for a legitimate reason what a coincidence they were both on the plane and why hasn't she been more forthcoming with him? If she was in the institute for a more sinister reason then I wonder what it was.

The other question. Did Henry Gale really not push those buttons. He is so good at playing mind games I just cannot believe anything he says anymore

I'm very weary of Libby..on the one hand i do think that she could well be a Hanso plant and that she has been from the time she was 'pretending' to be mentally ill..so as to keep an eye on Hurley and ensure that things went to plan [im thinking they all had agents or 'minders' keeping tabs on them..]..

On the other hand though its perfectly plausible that she is no more a mole than Jack is a diplomat and is simply an innocent victim in all of this just like Hurley is. Perhaps she just didnt want Hurley to associate her with the stigma of being in a mental institute? Perhaps the thought of him knowing or recognising her would've brought on a set-back in her recovery?

I suppose it could go eitherway..but one things for sure..i'll be watching her closely these next few weeks! there's just something about that woman!

You're right Roco there is something about her...there's more shocking Libby stuff to come in later eps, that's all I'm saying (I've seen clips on the net). What I will say is, even having seen what I've seen I've still got a lot of unanswered questions about her. In fact, I was reading on Lost pedia (full of spoilers btw!) that there's a lot of buzz among Lost fans wanting to know more about her & just how integral she is to the whole ethos of the show!

I know it has been suggested before..but now that we know she was in the Santa Rosa Mental Institute [or whatever its called], i wonder whether she knew Emily Locke [Locke's mom]...?

Im sure that's another angle they could suprise us with!

I mean we have Hurley, Libby, Emily and Lenny all in the same hospital..im sure theres a further 'angle' there..

I agree with you Roc; I think the loaties were pre selected to go on a journey of discovery of themselves. Prehapes they all need saving in some way. I am a true believer of a human experiment theory and I think Libby is a mole also.

ok, this may be a little off topic, but the burning question i have about Libby is, are those lips real!!! My god, i don't think i have seen them move once!

Hehe, she does have quite unique features doesnt she To be honest i mostly watch her eye's..i dont know why..but i think she's uses them well..she's able to convey this sense of 'somethings not quite right'.

She is funny coz in some scenes she is really pretty and in others u don't even recognise her. But those lip's...even when she kissed Hurley they didn't move!

And what about the hair? In the flashback she is brunette, on the island she is blond. 60 days, and her roots aren't showing! Its a miracle

Oh yes! You're right! That was technically a Libby flashback in the end - Hurley wasn't looking in this direction, and the camera clearly focused on her.

I totally agree..ive never thought she was 'pretty' per se, but in Dave she didnt look half bad ..but in some scenes she looks completely different.

You think she might have colegen[?] lips [or whatever you call it]?

This makes me wonder whether we'll even have a Libby flashback now..or whether they'll leave it till next season seeing as they 'touched' on hers. [unless of course we already had her flashback this past tuesday..not giving anything away C4'ers ]

Also, im not too convinced that she doesnt remember anything from that moment..i mean she could have been pretending to be ill in order to spy on Hurley..or even Lenny..afterall, despite his state of mind [or assumed state of mind!] Lenny does know quite a bit doesnt he?

And then if we question the legitimacy of Libby's condition..perhaps we have to question whether Lenny himself is REALLY ill...?

This whole concept along with the fact there are SO many connections made me think of a book I mentioned in the book thread.

The basic idea of it is that 'Heaven' is not as it's commonly perceived, but is a transient place that you must pass through. You meet five people that have in some way greatly impacted on your life (no matter how insignificant your interaction seemed on earth) and you have to resolve certain things before you can move on to rest eternally in peace. Like a test you have to complete almost.

Given the number of connections between the Losties and the idea that they are being put through a test for the sake of experiment made me think of this.

My first thoughts when I saw Libby in the mental ward was that she was put there to keep an eye on Lenny who knew the numbers. If she was a spy then thats could of been her job but when Hurley left the ward with the numbers she was told to follow him hense being on flight 815 (if she was on there - we still not 100% certain).

I think she will play a huge part in things to come. She knows more then shes saying and is keeping secrets.

DOes she know about the computer in the hatch? I have forgotten?

I like the sounds of that book SP, i must check it out.

I think there is value in what you are suggesting or putting forward. There has been lot of recent mention [or reference to] the 'underword' and things like and opposite to that. Couple this with the test or experiemnt theme that is at some level surely involved in all of this, it is worth considering. The thing that makes me doubt this [in the pure sense] is that i dont believe that the Hanso foundation to be all that ethical or working in the best interests of humanity. The fact that 'man' is [surely] behind this [Eg Hanso or his people] and not 'God' [as in the maker of the earth etc] makes me think that the island isnt a place whereby people have to pass tests in order to go to heaven [or that sort of thing]. Rather i see the island as a corruption of a pure vision. I reckon that the island was orignally used as a place whereby man and science could make the world a better and progressive place. A place whereby humanity would prosper from the works/science of the island. A modern day Scientific Garden of Eden, if you will...a place made by God but used by man to make the world a better place. However i feel that the tests that have being going on are not necessarily in the interests of getting man to heaven or anything like that..rather the tests have been aimed at [in the long run] 'controlling' mankind and manipulating mankind. I think we can already see results of this in the way they managed to bring these 50+ people together by shaping their paths [if like me, you go along with tha theory that is ].

Ive kinda lost what i was really trying to say, but basically i think you have a point because at the end of the day who's to say that heaven isnt on earth and for some people the island IS heaven [eg Locke..well, maybe not anymore, lol..but you get what i mean?]..it's just that ultimately i see this island as being modern day garden of eden..mans attempt at doing Gods work..and for me although it perhaps started off as a pure concept.it has since [maybe only recently?] become rather tarnished and conceited..

Though, i do accept that they are being tested and each going on their own journeys and facing their own demons etc..its just that im not sure that the purpose behind this is for their own betterment or good. [i think thats what im trying to say anyways ]

But very interesting discussion point.
