Is Kate Taking Alex’s Place?

In TGB we saw Alex talking to Kate and being an (ordinarily) stroppy teenager and this got me wondering about why she had undergone this personality change and led to the thought:

Does she see Kate as a threat to her place in the society?

From what we have seen there are far more male Others to female Others so competition would be high and now Kate is in the cell once occupied by Karl (who Alex obviously cared somewhat about) and she is wearing Alex’s dress (which set off obvious jealousy of ‘it looks better on you.’)

she seemed to be pretty nice to kate from my point of view.

At the moment I don't think that Alex sees Kate as a threat, no. Perhaps if Kate was allowed free reign to wander around the camp then she might feel a bit annoyed and threatened, but at the moment Kate is clearly a distressed and confused prisoner. Alex has shown that she's not exactly a weak pushover, so I don't think she sees Kate as anything more than another unfortunate test subject. And what's the betting that Alex's dress was taken without her permission before it was given to Kate...and even if Alex had given her permisson, I think it's understandable that she was still a bit rankled to come face to face with a stranger wearing her clothes. Alex behaved pretty well imo...no doubt because she has more important things on her mind to think about instead of Kate.

Yeah I don't see where people have got this low opinion of Alex from. In that situation she wasn't exactly in a position to help Kate escape, while she wasn't rude to Kate, just matter of factly telling her that she owned the dress. If anything, this business of sneaking away from the others to speak to our Losties is a sign that she's on our side (and by our I mean the Losties).

Same here. I don't get this interpretation. She didn't whine or throw a strop or anything - she was matter-of-fact and ultimately made no objection. If I was a disturbed teenager with little experience in normal social interaction, I'm sure I'd do a lot worse than point out slightly sadly but resignedly that someone else is wearing my dress....

Yeah, like I said at the end of S2..we should perhaps be weary of judging books by their cover. I always suspected that Alex may not be as 'good' or as pleasant as it seemed..and her attitude towards Kate was stropy to say the least. That doesnt make her bad (of course not)..but it does show another side to her..
