Article: The Absolute Sense of Destiny
Ive long wondered where John Locke got his remarkable sense of purpose from. Even before he stepped foot on the island, he seemed to have an incredible belief that he was destined..that he was special. I recall him shouting "Dont tell me what I can't do", as if he knew that to him impossible, was nothing..that there was no mountain too high. And yet, there he was, paralysed from the waist down and stuck in a wheelchair.. Where does such a sense of destiny and purpose come from? I wondered. 'The Man From Tallahasse' finally gave me the answer that I was looking for.. Lockes sense of destiny..his will to find a higher purpose, was not based on faith alone..it was not based on a visitation from an angel or from a message from an Isaac type character telling him of 'hotspots' and magical islands. No..Lockes absolute belief in his special purpose came from falling 8 stories..and surviving to tell the tale. Amazing..to survive such a fatal drop..many would've perished, yet our Locke survived..wheelchair bound yes, but alive nonetheless. I guess surviving something like that would make you feel special..it would make you feel that there was a divine 'reason' for you being alive, because normal people just dont survive things like that do they.. I guess this is what also kept Locke's fire burning..the belief..or perhaps moreso, the 'hope' that his living, his surviving, did indeed mean that his path was leading somewhere special. Hope is often such a brittle thing, yet if hope is all you have to show for the scars of living, well theres no wonder Locke hoped it would be worth it. I guess as they say..you have to lose yourself..before you can truely find yourself.
