Just watched Walkabout recently and I gotta say, Locke comes across as a bit of a weirdo.
Take "Phone Helen" for example and how Locke believed they had something special when it was simply her job to talk to customers. He was telling her how he "told off" Randy at work when all he did was say "...just don't tell me what I can't do..." to Randy in a nice calm tone. He even went as far as to buy her a ticket for the Walkabout. He believed he could manage the Walkabout whilst in a wheelchair though I guess this could be argued as simply believing he could complete the trip or possibly blocking out the thought he couldn't do something he so truly wanted to do and achieve. I dunno, in Lost in general, Locke seems like a normal dude but in Walkabout he's a tad odd. Any thoughts? |

Aww Locke's not a werido!
LockeWith regards to Phone Helen, by that point he'd had so many people manipulate, use and leave him, that he didn't have any family or close freinds left, so as soon as someone was prepared to say more than two words to him he would jump at the chance, poor guy. And I bet he thought that at least he knew what he was getting into with her (well at least to begin with), in that he would pay money and they would talk, that's all - no secret agendas or anything else he had to worry about. I also bet that what he said to Randy - although not a massively obvious, shouted out impassioned outburst of defiance - was a big deal for Locke to have done in the first place, when he had been so subservient and deferential to Randy up until then. It may have been a small thing to have been said, but it would have been a big victory for Locke, knowing that he has the ability to stand up for himself. Don't forget that in Walkabout Locke's already had all the drama and pain of all his previous flashbacks, including the incident that put him in the wheelchair in the first place, so I'm not surprised he's not on top form at that point in his life.

Mmm Ki I agree with what you're saying. Though I think St. Anger was taking Walkabout at face value. At the time we didn't know anything about Locke, except he was a little 'creepy' on island and talking to people via phone chat-lines, making a big deal out of very little ("standing up to Randy"
- that's all we knew, at that point I don't think we even knew that he had lost the use of his legs(Well not til the end of the episode, I think)! However, in my opinion he is different - maybe not weird, though I suppose he does have 'weird' character traits. I think pre-island I'd be able to relate to him, but there's something a little more sinister on-island which would probably bother me. Whatever your quarms with Locke though, there's no doubting he is a great character, having seen very little of him so far this season, he'll have some job beating Jules as my favourite character at the moment though ![]()

I know after Walkabout was shown some people were bragging that they had guessed all along that Locke was in a wheelchair, but I had no idea at all until the end! I'm glad I had no idea, since it was a great reveal. Compared to the other survivors he does have some eccentric/unorthodox (I refuse to call them 'weird' :P) character traits, but we're all different after all and that's just his natural personality I guess. I think any sinister aspects of Locke's behaviour on-island comes from his near blind belief in the goodness of the island, his belief in a grand destiny etc...I don't think he has any malicious intent behind such behaviour or actions; rather his faith in the island and what has happened to him is just projected very intensly and forcefully, which comes off as quite unsettling to people who witness it. Locke's had shockingly little screen time this season if you think about it! FI was a great episode, but other than that he's had daft scenes like Eko's funeral, or being outwitted by Nikki down the hatch And unlike Paulo and Nikki Jules has been a great character addition indeed. Ben is strong competition, but no-one will ever replace Locke as my favourite though!

Locke's always weird. End of.
I mean, taking his Walkabout Flashbacks. He has a creepy realtionship with a woman on the phone, trying to get her to go on a trip with him, and putting his entire belief in her....a tad creepy imo. And as Angs suggests, who really believes they can do a Walkabout when in a wheelchair, I'm not being mean, but he has to face the facts...sure he may have been in denile, but surely that just suggests how fragile his mind is. We've seen him have break downs on the island, hissy fits, and put all his faith in a bunch of numbers. This isn't a good life for anyone to believe and has led to lots of problems for him and the people around him. And my next point his creepy "orange smile"...just what was that? Scared me half to death. He's just odd. Always will be. And I just struggle to warm to him. *Shudders*
