Jack's said a lot of weird stuff, which on the surface is obviously meant to convey one meaning or the other, but can be interpreted differently.
The best one I can think of at the moment is when he fueled all the purgatory stuff - "It doesn't matter, Kate, who we were - what we did before this, before the crash. It doesn't really -- 3 days ago we all died."

I think it's just a comment on grandoise claims - how many technological advances have claimed in the past to be world-saving or some such thing and turned out to be nothing of the sort?
