Jack really cares about his father

Jack was upset that his dad died. Having a drink with Ana Lucia at the bar. Arguing and holding back the tears as he had a go at the airport staff.

Then a plane crash.

Jack sees his dead dad and a trainer. Was his dad a vision like Walt or Yemi or was he appearing where he shouldn't of been like Walt?

Then he sees an empty coffin

Jack's mission was to bury his dad. A mission he was desperate to do yet has made NO ATTEMPT to find the body of his father and bury him properly.

So does Jack care?

No.

to be honest, I've been wondering what happened to his body for aggeesss.
One minute it was his dad non-stop and then suddenly nothing! If I were in Jacks shoes the first thing I would do is look for my dad.

Personally I believe Christian is alive on the island (hence the visions and the missing body) or if nothing else his body was removed by Dharma/Hanso, as I definatly believe he is an Agent of the Island.

But it is strange he didn't bother afterwards, not even one attempt to find him, even after sitting through all those tedius flashbacks where he argued with the guy.

ooh, interesting.. i dont think jack cared as much about his father, because of thier fight, obviously he was upset, but he just wanted to get past his father, but i think deep down he still hated him over it

Im with AP on this one - Jack's did is alive and well on the island..ive always thought that and i'd actually be suprised if he's not an island agent (Dharma/Hanso etc) of somekind..or at least affiliated with. I reckon he helped proved the islands proprietors (whoever that is, if not HF) with test subjects from the real world...a 'bit' like Isaac did with Rose and Malkin did with Claire (IMO).

As for Jack not looking for his father. I agree that it is a tad strange and even worrying that this man who was so obsessed with finding his dad and burying him has seeminlgy lost interest since 'WR'. However I also can see it from another angle..in that Jack is a man who exists in a world of fragile cynism. He wants to believe in mystical things like Locke but he's scared to 'let go'. I know thats an over-used cliche when it comes to Jack but i honestly do feel thats the case. It's almost as if he now doesnt want to find out the truth because that truth would crush him. He's a man very much rooted in logic and rationale..it helps him get through the day. When his world is turned upside down with weird revelations, he cant cope and often breaks down. So whereas Locke chases the truth..i believe that Jack runs away from it. He knows that something is 'up' with the island and although he has made great strides in the faith department, I believe that he still cant quite allow himself to let go and totally believe. Finding his father (or the truth about his father) may very world destroy him. Jack is walking a fine line mentally and emotionally and so i can understand why he has seemingly decided to not search for Christian.

Jack lost his father. In two ways.

The first, and obvious way, his dad died. And he wasn't there for it. The 2nd way, he turned his dad in, and thought that his father hated him. Not nice for any child. Especially as one who sees himself as a failure.

In a way, I believe that Jack sees the plane crash as another part of his failure. He was supposed to bring his dad home for the funeral, but never got chance to. He didn't reunite his family and so has failed.

Part of me thinks Jack doesn't want to search for his dad on the island because he will fail again. And another part of me thinks it's because he just can't bare to do it. He doesn't want to find his father's destroyed/rotting,etc. body in the jungle. It would upset him more.

So YES, I do think Jack cares. He's just afraid. The poor thing. His dad died, he thought his dad hated him...Sawyer, his enemy, told him otherwise. He's broken and lost.

Cut him a break ok?

Yeah, i agree that much of Jacks motivation (or demotivation, in this case) is rooted in fear. He doesnt want to fail and at the same time he's scared..very scared

Aww..well even im starting to see Jack in a 'slightly' different light these days. The 2nd half of S2 was littered with impressive Jack aspects. He's still no Locke..but then, who is

Yes I do think that Jack suspects that something strange - unworldy even - is going on on the island that could have something to do with his Dad, but he doesn't want to admit it to himself let alone anyone else. So rather than admit that he was wrong in his mainly scientific beliefs he decides not to look into the problem any more, for fear of what answers he might find. Almost as if the problem will go away if he can't see it.

Also Jack has had quite a lot of other things to deal with on the island: the hatch, the Others, numerous deaths and Kate hanging around him to mention but a few, so he's been pretty pre-occupied and not really had the time - or the inclination - to go searching for answers about his father.

Yeah Beachy, I also agree with you in that Jack is scared that he'll fail again to put an end to the saga with his Dad - to bury it both literally and metaphorically - and it's well known that Jack doesn't like to fail or let go of things, so he's probably very reluctant to go searching for something that he probably doesn't want to see again.
