Default The bird screaming "Hurley"...

I was watching "Exodus" yesterday, and I noticed that there is a bird screaming "Hurley". Just before Locke gets dragged away by the monster (or whatever).

Now I did not notice it at the time, and I think its only because in "LTDA" Hurley points it out that I noticed it in that episode.

I wonder what thats all about. Of course you guys watching S3 may already know. Hurley seems to be more important than I have given him credit for. The numbers of course are central, but otherwise he is just this comic relief character. But maybe not. Maybe he is the most important survivor of them all.

Im certain that the Bird (possibly) screaming Hurley is LDTA was a nod to the fans and included in that episode because after Exodus people were claiming that they heard the bird scream Hurleys name..and so in LDTA, i think that the prodcuers just gave us a wink wink..and included it for a bit of fun. As they did with James' "it must be aliens" remark in LTDA.. it's almost as if by making reference to 'certain' things and having the characters openly refer to them, it's their way of negating such aspects/theories..(imo). So basically i think the whole bird appearance was just a bit of fun between producers and fans (if that makes any sense). Thats not to say that the bird isnt relevent..as the fact that they included it in the first place perhaps adds weight to the zoological angle of the island etc.

Also, im not completely sure if the bird ever did say "Hurley"..lest not originally..i think that the fans who noticed it just heard what they wanted to hear and it sort of grew from there - hence the appearance of the bird in LDTA. I could be completely wrong of course.

I recall back in the Pilot (1x01) it sounded as if a bird had called out Jack's name..as if to stir him from his slumber in the opening scene. So perhaps there is something in the whole bird calling characters names thing? Personally i think it's somewhere in between..but i do believe that the bird in LDTA was used to nod to the fans.

yeah i noticed this which kinda freaked me out :P I've got no idea what the hell it means, though of course we have no proof that it is actually saying Hurley's name, the directors could have just made it sound like that so it was a thing Hurley could be freaked out about :P

As for Hurley being an important character..well he was a bit of a drip in S2 (imo)..and who knows what S3 holds for him? But i do feel that he was always an important character (as they all are imo)..especially considering that he's the 'numbers man' (my own tag, not a spoiler )..he must have a level of importance (or involvement) that weve not yet seen? Though the Others did seem content to use him as a mere 'messenger' didnt they

This may sound silly, but since I wasn't visiting any forum at the time S1 was on telly, I never heard of this bird before LTDA. So while it may have been a nod to the fans, it is also true that I genuinely and for the first time heard this bird screaming "Hurley" in Exodus yesterday without any expectation that I would.

Does that makes sense?

no that doesnt make sense cos that's what Rocco was saying happened to most fans, unless you didnt actually know his name was Hurley and you still heard Hurley......

Interesting. To me it doesnt sound like he says 'Hurley'..even when i first heard it i didnt think it said Hurleys name (though in LDTA, i knew the fans wanted us to think it did, due to Hugo's comments). I guess were all conditioned to hear different things..

Perhaps you've interpreted it right though..who knows?

Another reason why I think its significant is that it appears in the "previously on Lost" bit of Exodus Part 2. But it does not actually go anywhere in that episode. They frequently re-edit and shorten the dialogue for this, or overdub dialogue on scenes that had different dialogue. So they could have left the bird out and just cut to Hurley saying "Whoever named this place the dark territory - genius". But they didn't.

i personally don't think it said his name, it might have sounded like it, very much like it because i thought it did, but surely it would have said "Hugo" not hurley, as that is his name... sort of like The others, they only use the real names when talking about the losties...

Ah, thats an interesting point. Why would the bird use his nick name.

I think you just killed that theory. Dead. Well done.

I saw a TV programme yesterday about the election of Arnie to be governor of California. Anyway, in this programme they showed a clip from the 50s where a helicopter was flying above LA (for watching traffic or something) and you could hear a radio broadcast saying something like "and now we go live to Joe in the Hurley Bird for the latest traffic update".

So the Hurley Bird is an obscure cultural reference to the 50s in LA!
