NOT IN PORTLAND ![]() The seventh episode of Season 3 is Juliet's flashback, where we learn about her life before coming to the island. She is working in Miami as a fertility specialist and trying to help her sister Rachel become pregnant by taking drugs from where she works. Her boss and ex-husband - Edmund - tells her that they could do great things with such research even though it's ethically questionable. Juliet has a meeting with Dr. Alpert from Mittelos who want her to come and work with them, but Juliet says Edmund will never let her. Not unless he's hit by a bus or something. Juliet learns that the drugs have worked and that Rachel is pregnant, and seconds after she runs into Edmund in the street and tells him this news he is run over by a bus. As she signs for his body in the morgue Juliet is visited by Dr. Alpert (accompanied by Ethan) and offers her the job again, telling her that it won't be possible for her sister to come along because his company is not quite based in Portland. Meanwhile on the island Sawyer and Kate escape form Pickett and are helped by Alex, who tells them she can get thema boat if they ahelp save her boyfriend Karl first. They track Karl down to another compound and get inside only to find him in Room 23 , where's he strapped into a chairand being drugged while being forced to watch various images and listen to loud music. As they get to the boat on the beach Pickett catches up with them, but Juliet kills him and allows them to go free. Except for Alex, who must stay behind. Jack finishes the surgery on Ben and asks Juliet what he said to her to make her want to save his life, and Juliet answers that after over three years on the island he promised that he'd allow her to go free. This isn't a bad episode and it was nice to get some background story on Juliet, but it's not one I can watch repeatedly. I still jump a bit when Edmund gets smacked by the bus even though I know it's coming! And Room 23 is just a scary scary place...

i had forgotten about the womb in the scans and when re watching this wondered (yet again) who it could be and wondered if its not an Other at all maybe then are old scans of Danielle sometime after she had Alex and that she had a some point allowed the Others to experiement on her telling her that they would give Alex back in return and in true Others style that promise never came true (i am sure she has had dealings with the Others in some way or other over the years)
agree with Ki on this one though good to find out all the information it holds but not really one to watch repeatedly |

Love this episode. Then again I would. It's great to see the development of Jules and I do love how Ben is still in complete control despite having no control whatsoever. Plus the last line from Jules is awesome and well worth watching repeatedly.

I love Elizabeth Mitchell's portrayal of Juliet. She portrays a blend of vulnerability and strength so effortlessly its as if shes not acting at all.
I thoroughly enjoy the scene where Edmund gets hit by the bus. At one point, when Juliet is walking up to Edmund, you can see the bus moving closer toward them yet it continues to catch me off guard everytime I see it. I also enjoy the fact that we get to see a lot of Alpert in this epi. He is very watchable. It was also the first episode that made me feel sympathetic toward any of the losties, most notably Tom and Juliet.

Good episode..lived up to my pre-rewatch expectations.
Agree that EM does a brilliant job with Juliet..as much as I now loathe the character. I really like the portrayal of Rachel also - the woman who plays her does a great job and she really could be a more regular character based on the manner of her contribution in only one episode (i wont include her minor appearance in "Left Behind"). I loved the introduction of Alpert - again, Carbonell does a fantastic job with the ageless one. Who would've thought that he would go on to play such an hypnotic role on the mythological landscape of the show? Liked the whole 'Mittelos' thing, even though it's a bugger to spell when speed typing. The idea that the Others went on the create their 'own' Dharma Initiative is, well, funny as hell Gotta love the Ben!Re-watch value 8/10

Exciting episode. It was fine for me rewatching, I've only seen it once and I wasn't bored this time around. The island action is pretty much non stop and keeps you pretty entertained. With Kate and Sawyers escape, Alex and Karl, Room 23 etc. etc. there's quite a lot going on. I remember this episode left me quite looking forward to the rest of series 3 with Kate and Sawyer (along with Karl) returning back to the other losties.
The flashback is good too. I like Juliet and as it was her first flashback and it was very fresh and interesting to see how she came to the island. Not to mention Alpert and Ethan, which was also a good part of it. Tom was funny again. 'By the way, I'm Tom'. ![]() |
