Welcome to Roco's Rooting-Tooting Lost Entire 1,2,3 & 4 Rewatch w/ Social Commentary Features. Yah!

This my very own rewatch thread, i'll be rewatching every single episode that has ever aired on Lost and divulging my thoughts on each one. Why? Because i'm a Lost freak and I can

Also, I want to specifically rewatch each episode with social commentary in mind - I want to re-enter the Lost with an awareness of power, groups, ethics, relationships and other social issues which Lost has thrown up and comment on these strands and see how they develop over the course of the seasons.

This is a personal rewatch, but feel free to chime in or whatever if you want, but don't expect any polished posts from me - my time is limited and so expect gramatical errors, spelling mistakes and whathaveyou. I don't know whether i'll even finish this thing..It depends..if I do, you'll know that Lost still does it for me..if I don't then I don't...basically /care

But when i'm old and grey, i'll be proud that I attempted such an enormous feat..

There's no schedule but the one which governs my spare time and space..

Much like Locke in Further Instructions, this is my own personal journey..one that I must take. Will I return the same? Who knows..Will I return at all?..who cares, but rest assured I shall enter the Pilot head-first and it will be interesting, to me, to see where my re-journey takes me.

Am I excited to see fresh-faced Kate and 2 scratches Jack? What about mystical Locke and pre-Ben Others?

Ready or not..here I come Jack's left (or is it right?) eye!!

I did that over christmas. Watched all of s1-s3 over 2 weeks. It was torture but good torture

What if I don't like Ben upon rewatching? yes..this is my primary fear..you can see where my priorities are can't you

What if I start..actually..liking..K..ate?

What if I fall out of love with Lost? (well, 100+ episodes is alot

..would you blame you!?)

What if i don't make it to 4.14 before 5.01?

And s1-3 is 69 episodes I think...I watched some of the bonus features but not all

Once you get going it's great. Of course I hardly slept but it was worth it

I know but what if..what if he doesn't stride out on that pier with the same gusto and supremacy that he appeared to way back in the day? What if the rewatch changes my opinion of him..what if..what if Kate brings sexy back!??

That's some comfort..but man there were some fillers in there..as much as i love Lost (and I LOVE Lost), at one point i would rather tear my eyes out than watch "What Kate Did". Oh Lord help me, i've already seen it about 7 times..one more might kill me

Season 1 episode 1 - Pilot 1 Part 1
(Roco's re-title: "The Who, The Where")

Government/Relationships
Jack saves his sister Claire. Almost a test for Jack. Why was he in the jungle. What would have happened if he CHOSE not to be the hero? Yes, he didn't do it on purpose, but what if he "let it go"? Rose would have died..Claire?. Goes against everything we see S1 Christian teaching him. I will follow this with interest (considering what becomes of Christian) as it either doesn't make sense, or the creators have Jack's character/history so finely tuned.

No real semblance of power just yet, although Jack is appointed leader without necessarily wanting or expecting it. Boone appears to want power and is an early candidate for leader, but his early pen-debacle soon ruins that chance.

A kind gesture seems to go along way for some - Hugo giving Claire and extra plate of food, whilst for others it's the cold shoulder - Walt and shannon failing to appreciate the kindess of Michael and Boone. Not much would ever change there.

Ethics/Morals

Kate removes shoes from dead man - yes he's dead, and yes she needed walking shoes, but ethically it is wrong. Why not make plans to bury him and then remove his shoes?

Smokey unethical to kill pilot. But Smokey is the government in situ..is the government doing whats best for the people/island in this instance? Probably.

Mythology
Lost was always scifi..always. The very first scene when Jack opens his eye is accompanied by a VERY scifi-esque sound. The tone was set from the very first moment.

Vincent. Creepy..and a voyuer(sp) to-boot. Dogs can (supposedly) see dead people..heaven knows what Vincent is able to see. I guess the final mobisode finally confirmed Vincents ability - if you will.

The smoke monster..so ambigious, yet so omni-present. Smokey's accompanying sound seems so different in these early days.

General:

Cindy scrubs up well. Jack is a major flirt, even in a time of trauma - having to take his fathers dead body home.

Jack wakes up from the 'crash', just as Ben did from his 4.09 time-travelling. Is this really the first iteration of Jack 'waking up' on the island? I realise that i am prejudice because i'm a time-loop freak, but it's wth considering.

Kate's interaction with orange-smile Locke is interesting. What was Locke's agenda here?? I used to think it was his way of trying to cheer Kate up, but seriously, it's an odd thing for him to do to someone he doesn't know. I guess we have to consider his miracle..he's on top of the moon after realise he can walk again, but yet he still doesn't quite understand what has happened to him - is this his way of expressing his glee and confusion all at the same time? Also it should be noted that Kate is removing shoes from a dead person - is this symbolic somehow of Locke's rebirth? Who knows.

Charlie - major funny..great interaction with Kate.

Jack, impatient and leading..doesn't even realise he's leading.

Locke, calm and serene..what is he thinking as he stares out at the ocean. What a difference from the impatient Locke we see in seasons 2 and 3..and to some extent, season 4. What has changed for Locke..what has unravelled him from this all-knowing mystical giant of a man? I guess the closer you get to your dream, the more doubt reigns.

Rescue seems to be expected..and why wouldn't it be. Sayid and Jack seem to most eager to get off the island. Kate v. strong, stronger than Charle at this stage. The template of a good female character. where did it all go wrong?

The pilot was taken out by Smokey - no coincidence of course. Smokey was more vicious to the pilot than it was to Keamy and his squad. Only Eko and Shannon (via Boone's dream) receive a similar destruction.

Episode so slow moving, yet over in a heartbeat with plenty of drama. How did they do that?
