Child Prodigies and Characters On 'Lists'

Any theories on why the Others seem to have a fixation with Child Prodigies?

We know Walt was special. We know John Locke was a special child and it has been hinted that Aaron is special in some way (mustn't be raised by anyone except Claire).

When some of the Losties were tied up, hooded and gagged on the Dock, it was hinted that Jack, Sawyer, Kate were the only ones required - they let Hurely go.

Jack seems to have been wanted to fix Ben's back - but why did they want Sawyer and Kate? I can't believe they were brought there to help resolve Kate's: "Who Do I Love Best" Problem.

However, Kate is now caring for Aaron but Sawyers role is still a mystery. Will Sawyer's child end up on the island at some point? Is she special in some way?
