I know how and what they've gone through makes big news but as it was meant to be kept secret, i.e they had to lie and keep secrets then why didn't they go back quietly where no one would recognise them and start a new life with a clean slate??
They were presumed dead and I can't imagine that anyone would recognise them until they were the famous O6. So why the big cover up?? Surely going back quietly would have been easier. |

A few people have posted their thoughts on this in T&S: Why are the Oceanic 6 so famous?
Personally I think that the nature of their return might have something to do with it - although i'm willing to shy away from the potential mystical elements of their return (although i still believe it possible that they were 'magic-boxed' home) in order to consider what it would be like if 6 people somehow survived a plane crash in the real world (as in, 'real life'). I think that such people would be elevated to celebrity status - especially if they were literally presumed dead. People saw the wreckage and heard the news that no-one onboard flight 815 survived - all bodies were accounted for, and so for 6 of them to return after this is quite sensational. Somewhere along the line the truth and the deception (i.e the fake, or duplicate 815 wreckage in the Sundre Trench) must have collided - as how would people rationalise what they saw on the news? Does Widmore get blamed for faking the wreckage? This (or something on this level) would surely catapult the status of the 6 survivors even further..and the thing is, they needn't have to blow their cover, since a fake (or duplicate) wreckage is a fake or duplicate wreckage, which they can claim ignorance over (and rightly so, since they knew nothing of it until Naomi told them upon her arrival to 'craphole'). So i think it just about makes sense for them to be viewed as 'celebrities' upon their return. I mean consider this - returning from the dead, be it literally or metaphorical, is one of the most redemptive acts one can perform. Whatsmore, people always cherish the dead (just look at the fans view of Charlie these days). To return from the presumed dead is even more awe-inspiring. ![]()

Thanks for replying, but I didn't explain myself too well!!
What I am wondering is if there's a big cover up which they have to lie about, then why didn't they go back to somewhere without the celebrity status. I'm sure they're famous because they, or the powers that be told the media that they were survivors. If they have to cover everything up then I would think it would be better to return with a new identity and start a new life and have nothing to do with Oceanic or the island. There is a slim chance they might be recognised by someone they knew but I would imagine it would be very slim. There are many times I've seen someone and thought they look like someone, so if I presumed they were dead I would think that this was just another "don't they look like" scenarios. So my question is why did they tell people they were the survivors when they could have gone back to reality as someone new. I hope I've explained it a bit better this time!! ![]() |

A catastophe of the proportions of the Oceanic 815 crash would have been in the news for a long period of time (and only 3 months have passed)! I'm sure that at least Hurley's and Sun's "deaths" would have been big news - Sun's in Korea (the daughter of the rich, powerful *cough* businessman dies in a crash) and Hurley's probably everywhere (the lottery winner multimillionaire?). What were they going to do? Get fake identities, go into hiding, would Jack have to get a fake diploma and references to get a job as a surgeon, how would their families explain their return or would Hurley and Jack have to be forever separated from their moms, etc...? Why would they complicate their lives like that? It's far easier to lie about the crash than forge a new identity! The only one who could have had reasons to fake her identity was Kate, after all, it was what she had been doing for a long time. Not to mention that none of them would get any money from the settlement... how would they even make a living? Would Sun become a waitress, for instance?
All in all, if they couldn't get back to their lives, why would they even want to return? |
