Don't you find talking about the Freighties rather difficult? I say this because there were two distinct types of Freighties.
There was Keamy and Co who were the badasses you wouldn't want to meet in the High Street let alone a dark alley! ![]() Then there was Frank, Miles, Daniel, Charlotte and Naomi who seem (on current evidence so far) no worse than any of the Losties or most of The Others. I like the majority of these nicer type of Freighties and look forward to hearing more about them in Season 5. Wouldn't the nicer Freighties have thought it strange to be cooped up on that Freighter with those badass Rambo types and how did the bad ones explain their presence on the Freighter to the goodies? I seem to have forgotten these details! |

Yes, the dynamic of the Freighties is an interesting one as you say. I think it's likely that the freighties kept as many secrets amongst their inter-groups, as the Losties have - hence the Captain not knowing about the 2nd protocol and Miles having inside info on Charlotte (although he may have been told about her ancestory by the whispers once on the island).
I guess everyone on board the Kahana had their own motivations, for some it was money, for others it was purpose. The group was comprised of people to do specific jobs, I guess if the motivation is there, people will ask less questions in order to get to where they need to be. It's actually quite funny looking at the freighties..much like the Dharma Initiative there was this promise of "equality" and everyone being on the same level (i.e. Minkowki's comments to Michael in 4.08), but ultimately there were clear lines between the different groups on-board. See Dharma 'workman', see freightie scientist.....see Dharma scientist, see freightie mercenaries. An irony not to be overlooked, perhaps?

It is interesting to consider whether there was any hostile feelings toward the Dharma Scientists from the Workman as perhaps Roger was not the ONLY one whom was conned into moving to the Island for what he believed to be a more 'important' job. I think there would likely be more comradery amongst Dharma employees than amongst the Freighter people.

Yeah, I certainly don't think Roger was alone. Kelvin was another disillusioned soul - even mocking the "namaste" greeting and the futility of the 'Dharma way'.
Young Ben himself was another one..his fathers abuse aside, I seem to recall him saying "I don't like it here!" - or perhaps that was my imagination. But Radzinsky..Mikhail and probably countless others (no pun intended) could also be argued to be disenchanted with Dharma-hood. I would 'think' that the Frieghties had more collective motivation for their cause, partly because it was built on individual goals. Rge DI's mission seemed more ambigous and less personal..but the Frieghties each had/have personal reasons to be on that boat. ![]()

I suppose as a child, Ben was never going to invest in Dharma and the only reason he seemed content in his flashback [right before he killed his Roger] was because he was undercover the entire time. ALOT of people dislike their jobs though I would never have thought that working for the D.I would create such negativity amongst it's workers. On the surface it seems a wonderful place to live and work. I suppose it really was not as glamourous as it seemed for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you are correct there as the Freighters' were working on a one-off mission for Widmore's money, adding to their personal motivations. I think only those with 'personal feelings' and 'emotional attachment' to Dharma's goals really cared about their jobs.
