Default Desmond's Parentage

After writing my post about motherless and abandoned children, it suddenly struck me that we have never seen a back story for Desmond showing him with his parents - have we?

Are the producers of LOST deliberately hiding Desmond's parentage or isn't it relevant?

I just seem to recall that we know quite a lot about most LOST characters parentage but not Desmond's. If Desmond's parents have been shown on LOST let me know and I'll shut up!

Good point, along with Sayid, their flashbacks have never mentioned any family, but they both seem to concentrate on their loves of their lives.
Maybe Penny and Nadia are the more important of the partnership in island relevence???
I think it's safe to say that Mr. Widmore is definately involved. Nadia also had an influence on Charlie, and Locke was at her house when he realised his Father/Cooper wasn't actually dead.

I think there's been so much going on with Desmond that I don't think the writers have had chance or unless they're saving it for s5/s6.

Had we ever seen Jack's mum before the finale?

Isn't it funny how Desmond is one of the few characters with no 'daddy issues' that we know of, yet he still manages to have 'daddy issues' via Penny's father, Charles Widmore.

Yes it was JAck's Mum who asked him to go to Australia and get his Dad, back in S1.

This is something that just popped into my head so it sort of makes sense, if not feel free to put me right

Anyway if you travel in time you can't do anything to change the future, regarding your ancestors, or you wouldn't be born. As it seems that Des is the only one of the losties who seems to time travel, maybe this is why we know nothing of his parents. Like I said it's off the top of my head but sort of seemed worth a comment

According to websites that give the meaning of names, Desmond means: man of the world, society. Hmmmm, interesting......

Charlierocks, that's a good point! I don't think I recall Desmond even mentioning any family at all; but I could be wrong about that.

Interesting.

But are you saying that he deleted his parents? I'm just trying to understand what your point is before I comment.

(Btw, i'll move this over to the Desmond Hume Forum - please continue there)

I'm not really sure what I'm trying to say, but could he have acidentally done something when he was time travelling?? Or maybe he's been erased of his proper life as he could have confused the timeline??? He still has a strong Scottish accent, yet I don't think we've ever seen him in Scotland.
He's also done a lot of things, prison, army, monastry and he mentioned some sort of medicine when he told Jack to lift his ankle at the stadium. All of these one would assume would be long term, yet for a young man he seems as though he's done lots of things, yet no thoughts of family, only Penny???

All Desmond's various jobs and stations in life fit in with the meaning of his name:

Man of the world or society.

Desmond seems a bit of an everyman doesn't he? He's been in the army (hunter/killer/survival) been in the monastery (man of faith) and considered a medical career (man of science)

Thanks for moving the post. I should have put it here in the first place.

Just found some mention of Desmond's father on Wikipedia. Apparently Desmond's father left home! This is why Desmond failed to graduate at university because his support was needed back home:

Just a thought but maybe he hasn't had any mention/sign of parents in the show as he wasn't on flight 8-15

working on the basis that parent issues are soemthing that those on the plane had in common

Sayid's family died - it was mentioned in flashback when Kate's dad wanted to get Sayid to get information from Tariq

Des mentions his father whilst talking to Mr. Widmore about marrying Penny:

Charles Widmore - Penny didn't tell me you were an actor, Desmond.
Desmond - Oh, no. It's actually Set Design. For the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Charles Widmore - Impressive. You didn't graduate from University.
Desmond - No sir. I had to look after my 3 brothers after my father...
Charles Widmore - Any military experience?
Desmond - No sir.

Personally I think that Desmonds parents are maybe irrelevant. He seems to be one of the more Independent characters, Like Sayid and Eko - Who tend to have made their own way in their life before the island ,
