Default Will Des get to read his book before he dies?

Will Desmond get to read his book (Our Mutual Friend) before he dies? He said that he's saving it for his final moments. Where is it btw - didn't it get impoaded by the hatch?

Of course this is assuming Des will ever die - he might not..but I just think it could be a heart wrenching way to take the guy out should they need to tug at our heart strings.

very good point KoR

i also want to know how he thinks he will have enough time to read it before he dies - if i were him i think i would read it all up to the last chapter so i only have a little bit to read at the end just in case my time is limited

..And presuming he isn't already dead

All joking aside though he's the one person who may have a choice in when he dies, because of his ability to see Charlies death and other future events...

But that's a fair point too, EC. It won't be as effective heart-string-puller if Des finds out he's going to die and then spends 7 episodes reading the book...

Also, I wonder if this should be forgotten about now? He went to read it and found Pens note - so maybe the book was a (and has now served it's) symbolic reason??

Yeah, I think he thought that the Lockdown stuff was going to be the cause of death, so he went to read his book.

oh yeah i didn't think about that - i did think when he started to read it in the Swan that it was quite handy that he was going to kill himself so he had all the time he would need to read it

i see what you are saying but it does make the whole "i will read this before i die" bit pretty pointless if he doesn't actaully do it

When the soldier hands him the book, he asks something like "so how will you know you are going to die" which at the time was an obvious point to make, but having seen S3 looks like a clue about things to come, don't you think?

I think the book was a sort of way in (like Kor said) to emotionally reach out to us. of course at first during LTDA when he found the letter from Penny, but it could be potentially used in the future. I'm not sure how likely that is though... it might seem a bit lazy on their part.

i don't know, maybe he'll decide his/and Penny's life matters more than a book and he might just read it and not be imprisoned by it.

I don't know!

I don't think he will, because so far we've only seen him actually see Charlie's future, so he probably won;t actually know when he dies.

Yeah, the book is a bit like the photo of Des and Pen - it's gives us, the viewers, a point of reference in the lifeline of Des and his faith etc.

I just wonder whether we'll the book pop up in any future flashes.

The possibility tha Des is living (or able to consciously live) in several points of time really makes this book an anchor for us viewers. When 'our' Des reads it..that's it for him, right..

Unless like somebooks, the end is really just the start..

I also see it as a symbolic thing rather than reading material for Des. It might be there to remind him about Penny and her intentions for him.
