Way back in 2x01 when we first saw Des that by series 3 he would be a regular. Well i suspose so, but after he ran awayi kind of thought that was that and i forgot about him.

But more than all that, could we have guessed that in such a short space of time Des would be such a hugely poppular character who gets more screen time than Jin, Sun and Claire put togethor?

has anyone noticed that anythingthat took place on the series 1 cliff-hanger is pretty pointless now?

1. the hatch - it's imploded, nothing eles will happen with that.

2. the raft - it got blown up, they arrived back on the island.

I wouldnt say its pointless as the hatch implosion has led onto the Desmond time travel stuff and the raft led onto Mike trading Jack, Kate and Sawyer so that him and Walt could escape. So we needed everything from the season 1 finale for the plot to progress.

After Desmond ran off I always thought that he would return at some point but never expected him to be such a main Character but I can see why he is as he has the buggest connection to the Island out of all the losties after being there for the longest and his connections to Widmore.

Everything happens for a reason...

Finding the hatch led to the blast door map > The Pearl > Patchy (important storyline now)

The raft led to finding the Tailies > Eko > Pearl > Patchy

Thus both storylines were important in shaping the current storyline. In Lost, plots don't stop, they lead into each other, with each plot arc forming part of the next, as well as the overall plot arc.

Without the hatch, raft and a combination of other seemingly mundance factors, we would not be at the point we are now in Lost.

Or something like that.
