Hot skipping his way through time and now seeing flashes from the future (or so it could be argued). The man has taken on a whole new relevence..but could this lead to a potential leadership role within camp Lostie?
They say with "great power, comes great responsibility" (or something like that *goes to rewatch Spiderman*). With this in mind..would Des and his new found (or newly unlocked) abilities make for a good leader?

i don't think Desmond would like being leader very much, because he was so upset about what happened to him (trying to kill charlie :P) and i think he's had enough of "saving the world" or island or whatever with the button and stuff.
I also think Jack will be back soon, I think Ben will let him go, because Ben kept the deal with Michael and Walt and stuff. So Jack will be leader again ![]()

The small part of me that falls into Jack's camp wants to scream no at this thread. Jack is a good guy, a great leader and he's served our Lostees well over the yea-, um, weeks in their case. I want Jack to be leader, and more than anything I want Jack to come home!
BUT I do think that Desmond could make a good leader, he has the makings of a good leader, kind, friendly, brave and has knowledge about the island. However, as you say, such power could lead to problems. If he keeps seeing the future his hero complex could get too big and he could spend all his leader time focusing on saving people, which would bring a problem, as nothing would get done on the island. I really don't know what to vote yet, it's a tricky one. I'll get back to you when I've read more thoughts.

no. Hes helping himself. I like Desmond, but he is not a leader, he has a lot of good qualities, but at times he has been a coward. He ran away from penny, and then he ran away from the button, he could very well run away from the losties

Well I think that Desmond would be a fantabulous leader, however I dont think that he will either get the job or want it.
I could be oh so wrong but like Jen said he has been "saving the world" for quite sometime I think he is happy to just exist on the island and lend a hand as and when. I dont know about Jack being back anytime soon but that is just my opinion. |

I completely agree with TOO. Des has many good qualities and is a lovely guy but he doesn't have it in him to lead. His track record of freaking out and running away does not inspire confidence.
Although if he copes with what's happening to him just now it could well make him a much stronger person. I'll hold out for the Locke thanks ![]()

Although i have a feeling that Jack might choose to remain with Jules..then again, he wouldnt leave Kate all alone with Sawyer..would he? But back on topic: Interesting point aboutn Desn being tired of saving the world..It's logical to assume that he would be..though that doesnt stop him from trying (i.e. with saving Charlie)..something which i like about him. Though to counter that argument, he did initially run from the hatch and leave the mess for Jack and Locke to clean up ![]()

I love Desmundo. But I think 'just because he sees the future' won't make people trust him. Especially since he seems so cynical in his opinion "you're going to die Charlie". Not good for team moral.
*Pulls a KoR* As Locke would say "A leader needs to know where he's headed before he can lead" I think this is true, I don't think Des truly knows where he's going. He's just kind of 'confused' and 'messed up' at the moment...Though I will say this. Before the fail safe 'incident' he'd of made a good leader.

Also, i think that it will be interesting to see just how he used these powers in future - will he be self sacrificial (as he is currently oding, it could be argued)..or will he simply help himself (is there a chance that he could use his powers to save himself from a certain fate?). Afterall..what dictates which flashes he sees? Can he pick and choose which flashes to grab and look into? Does he see everyones fate? Can find a way to see everyones fate..and not just Charlies, for instance Also..if you could keep someone alive for one day..even though you know that the next day, you'll have to continue to keep them alive, would you do it? Is it worth it? is it a life worth living (for both parties)? What if you save that person for 1000 days..will there come a time when fate gets tired and says: "You know what Des, screw this..you wanna save him..fine..i'll lay off..ive got bigger fish to fry" Could Des bargain with fate..one life in exchance for another..his own, perhaps? Sorry..just some general questions that this topic has made me think of. man i love this episode! ![]()

I think Desmond is a very valuable character in the leader department but I don't think he's up to leadership.

Aye, great though Desmond is, he's no leader.
He's been alone for so long that he's not fully integrated with the group yet as shown by his sometimes odd behaviour (skipping stones away from the group during Locke's speech). He's a cool dude, with some potentially knowledge and experience but people have grown reliant on Jack, etc. and this is who they'll turn to when looking for a leader.

Im on the fence, but there is not option on the poll for that :P !
Desmond. I think he could make a good leader. It all depends how his character develops from here on in. Will he, after removing all his pent up anger, now take initiative and think up ideas independantly, or will he simply advise Locke with the future! Who knows. Most likely second in command - right had man... I was trying to do a Starsky and Hutch comparison here but it has slipped my mind :P Dez for Deputy Prez!
