Who was Desmond before he came to the Island? He seemed a pretty happy and satisfied person at the stadium in MOS,MOF. Do you think he was a good person or a bad person in the real world. And what inspired him to go on the round the world race (assuming he was on a race around the world), I doubt he just woke up one day and thought, "Hey, I should go sail around the world!", there must be a story behind it. And also, don't you hate it when people put "discuss" at the end of a post?

Des is a bit of an enigma. He baffles and confuses me..but we will ge to the bottom of him one day!

I reckon that he may have been tapped up by the Hanso foundation pre-island [either knowingly or unwittingly..] and asked/told/or manipulated into going on the race around the world.

I think that his words to Jack - "lift it up" when speaking of the possibility of a miracle cure for Sarah are very significant. This is because on the map on the hatch door i recall seeing the quote "Lift up your heart, lift up your heart, lift up your heart"..and this is very similar to what Des said to Jack in the stadium. Anyway i think that there is some sort of link between Sarah's [supposed] 'miracle' cure, Dharma, Christian, Desmond and Jack.

Oh and one final comment from me for now..i reckon that Desmond is a dualist..that being, a man of science and a man of faith - because he told Jack that he was a failed medical student [or something] and when in the hatch i recall seeing him 'cross' himself..therefore he is also a Christian. Im not sure how important this is or if it's of any importance at all but i thought that with all the faith/science references it might hold some relevence.

me too i think there is a connection with Jack meeting Desmond while ie was looking after Sarah and thats how he saved Sarah but not the Italian guy

but i have also considered that whatever the mircal is is within Jack and he doesn't know how to control it as when he was operating on Sarah he was concentrating on Sarah but when he was operating on the Italian guy he was concentrating on the guys daughter so his "energy" was channelled elsewhere
