Is Desmond Psycic?

How does he know things are going to happen?? If it was the hatch explosion how come Locke isn't psycic?

I was wondering this. He knew that Locke was going to start searching for Sawyer, Kate and Jack.. did he also know about the lightning or was that something he set up himself?

He knew about the lightning I think because it would of hit Charlie && Claire I think but I'm not sure. He knew that Claires roof needed fixing though. Tis all very strange

I think that Des has received some form or predictive powers (be they prophetic, psychic etc) as a result of the hatch implosion. It would seem that the implosion has affected each of the 3 amigo's differently - Des with his new found 'ability', Locke was rendered 'mute' for a while and EKo..well poor Eko was offered to the bear as a way for Locke to refind his way again (imo).

I think a possible explantion as to why only Des has been made psychic (or whatever) is that he was down in that hatch for a mighty long time..thus he had more exposure to the electromagnetism than Locke or Eko..so perhaps that last belt of energy unlocked some innate ability inside him, moreso than it would anyone else?

As for the lightening..well i think that the whole roof thing was the result of him predicting that the roof would collapse (which it later did, though i dont feel that the producers made this obvious..). So basically he predicted that his lightening bolt would cause it to rain and cause Claire's roof to collapse. Another indication of his predictive powers..

Im thought it did - i recall Chucky and whatsherface getting drenched as it suddenly dawned on Chucks that Desmond had earlier forewarned of the roof collapsing.

Also, if it didnt collapse then im not sure how Charlie and thingy would be drenched whist sitting in their hut..

But i will have to rewatch to make sure i suppose..but thats what i thought at the time

Possibly I wasn't watching closely, but I didn't see the roof collapsing or the drenching. I thought that Desmond had predicted that Claire's shelter was going to be struck by lightning, which is why he put up the conductor to prevent that from happening, and he told her to move because of the roof because she probably wouldn't believe him if he said 'Your hut's going to be struck by lightning this afternoon'.

Hehe, yeah i can see what you mean. Im not sure why they (the producers) didnt make the whole thing collapse to better illustrate the fact that Des had earlier predicted the roof falling in. I guess they didnt want to be too obvious.

yeah i agree with Burger boy i think he put the thing up to stop the thing getting struck by lightning so their thing wouldnt thing.

Im not convinced but still it's worth considering. A couple of problems with this idea though:

1) How would lightening hit a hut made out of wood and tarp?

2) also if Des really forsaw Lightening specifically hitting her 'hut' and didnt just come out and tell her than then he must be very confident in his ability to harness the weather because it's only been like a day since he first realised he could predict things. Is his confidence in his own power really growing that quickly..so quickly infact that he's willing to risk the life of Claire and Aaron

Im still with the idea that Des merely predicted the roof falling in, for now

Same reason it went for my back lawn once, I suppose. It can be fairly random. Or perhaps it was going to hit the nearest tree, which still would've been pretty deadly for Claire. The lightning rod was set up right outside her tent, wasn't it, so without it there would at the very least hae been a pretty near miss.

She wouldn't have believed him - remember he altered his story for Hurley so he seemed confused rather than prescient, so he must be aware of how he sounds. Telling her there's something unspecified up with her hut that he needed to fix would've been more likely to shift her. The other thing is that his merely predicting her roof was going to fall down a) isn't very dramatic and b ) doesn't tie in with his then making a lightning conductor: that would make for a fairly illogical plot.

I had assumed that it was part of his plan to see whether or not he could control/harness the weather.. a result which he predicted would make it rain and cause Claire's tarp to collapse and drench her and the baby..which it did (i think )..

Though Murg may be right..i'll have to rewatch
