Is Desmond Psycic?

Des built the lightning thing because he knew that lightning was going to strike Claire's tent...hence him telling her that her roof needs fixing and that she should move it. Or something. So when she didnt move he built the thing so the lightning striked that instead.

I hear you..it's just that it's a bit coincidental isnt it? I mean, just when Des gets these powers then the 'lightening God's' ( ) decide to send a bolt down to Claire's tent? or are we back to the whole coincidence Vs fate thing again if we are then that Des sure does get shrouded in that whole thing doesnt he (what with the plane/fate/coincidence debate and all..)

Unless, the island set it up so that he would be given a mini test in order to help him gain confidence in his powers? I suppose the island could somehow power an electric storm (or bolt of lightening) if we suspend belief

hmm, still not convinced though..i like the idea that he just didnt want Cliare getting wet and predicted the tarp falling. But i'll consider your interpretation whilst rewatching

What I don't understand is, if Desmond can predict Lockes speech, and then the lightning strike, why did he not predict Ekos death?

Is it just random, or is it only certain types of things he can predict?

Maybe where ever he got his power from only wants him to be able to prevent certain things, so perhaps wherever or whoever he got his psychic ability from didnt want him to be able to stop ekos death. Or maybe Desmond just didnt like Eko

well if it's the "island" that's given him the power, and if indeed the black smoke and the island are "working together" then the island wouldn't want him to save eko right?

Yeah, there is the possibility that Desmond himself is being manipulated by whhatever gave him those powers (assuming he didnt alreadfy have them..as it could be that the implosion merely 'unlocked' his dorment and innate ability).

If Des' powers can only operate on a fixed template, it makes you wonder what the purpose of 'them' or 'it' allowing him to forsee what Locke was going to say and do..unless the island (or whatever) wanted to give him so 'experience' with his new skills?

Eitherway though it does seem as though the island suddenly developed an issue with Eko and wanted him to either apologise for his entire life (from which much goodness was still derived) or die. Eko's death still doesnt make sense really..i mean why did the smoke suddenly come for him? What salvation would the Smoke have offered him had he asked for total forgiveness? Im tempted to suggest that Smokey just got out of the wrong side of bed that day, but then there must be a more specific reason as to why it went all rambo on poor Eko's @ss One possibility is that EKo was becoming too wise..he was so faithful and so dedicated that his faith transcended that of his faith in the island itself..perhaps the island wanted him to shift his faith away from God/Christianity and towards the island (ala Locke)??

I just remembered - when Desmond met Jack in the stadium in the opening episode of S2, didn't Jack say "I couldn't fix Sarah" and then Desmond says "What if you did fix her?"

At the time many of us thought he had secret links with Dharma as did Jacks dad and it was him that fixed her (Jacks dad, not Desmond).

But what if he was psychic back then?

So its like his powers where subdued while he was down in the hatch, but now its blown up he got them back?

What he can and cannot predict may well be random though. I remember seeing an episode of the X-files with a guy who could predict the death of the people around him which drove him mad, while he was all the time trying to predict the lottery numbers but failed because that wasn't the gift he had.

Yeah i confess..i was one of those whothought that maybe Christian fixed Sarah and that maybe Des was being manipulated into Jacks path..(although still possible).

But yeah, good idea - maybe Deso was psychic back then..that makes sense..infact it makes alot of sense. One of the things that ive long believed is that the island heightens peoples natural abilities (Made ethan stronger, jin/eko better hearing, Walts skills etc), so that would fall nicely into that idea too. So perhaps the implosion merely served to unlock Deso's ability..and perhaps being couped up inside the hatch prevented the natural properties from untapping his power.

Yeah, he abilities do seem rather random..as in he cant forsee everything..perhaps there will be a pattern to the type of things that he can forsee. So fae we have Locke's speech and a lightening bolt...hmm, not much to go on yet then, huh. But we shall see

But yeah, good idea..it doesnt negate the idea that the island was soley responsible for his powers, but when we conisder the 'find yourself' tag..perhaps this makes sense in that Deso has realised his true self and the powers tha he always had

Yes, i like the way you brought the strong child theme into it aswell..thats nice thinking. So opening the box could (also) be a metaphor to opening ones uptapped powers..
