Desmond - Island Prophet?

I found the whole Desmond thing so intriguing..

I mean, he's naked in the jungle for a start..my first thought was that he's been 'tampered with' (so to speak)..but then we find out that he knew that Locke would give that speech..which seems to suggest that the hatch implosion has given him psychic powers..so could he now be a prophet of somekind? Let's not forget the words of Ben back in S2: "whats the difference between a prophet and a martyr?" ..Jack responded: "..they both end up dead", Ben: "thats the spirit"

..i suppose what im getting at is, did the creators use Ben's words as a pre-curser or forshadowing? Is Desmond now an island prophet of somekind? ..or will he be a martyr?

And how about Hurley's 'Green Hulk' reference..there's surely something in that?

Eitherway it seems like old Des has now got some form of special ability..or sickness..

Whatever has happened to him I don't think he is fully aware of it yet, he seemed very confused when Hurley said that there wasn't a speech.

Although it was interesting seeing him at the end of the episode, just chucking the stones into the sea as though there was no point in participating in the group scenario, having already lived it.

Yeah, he seemed more than dazed and confused didnt he..

He did seem apart from it all..as if his thoughts lay elsewhere ("already lived it" - nice way of describing it ).. ..infact thinkng about it, i reckon that this could perhaps be a pre-curser to what Boone said in the airport vision - "he's looking out for himself"..i think this is very relevent. Perhaps Desmond will use his powers (or whatever) for selfish reasons? Maybe he will attempt something dangerous in order to save himself? .. I suppose he was already presented as a somewhat selfish character after spurning the chance to be with Penny in order to 'run away' and get his honour back..

Watch this space, methinks..

I'm somewhat expecting Desmond to join the Others because they can offer him things that the castaways can't, such as the possibility to escape for the island and contact with the outside world - we know that he still wants to get back to Penny so I wouldn't be surprised if he would do anything for this to happen.

Although spending years down in the hatch only talking to one other person will surely make it hard for him to integrate into the castaway society, hence why he would be inclined to help himself rather than helping other people.

yes and in the dream sequence didnt boone say that desmond was looking after himself, therfore backing up the theory that if given the chance des will join the others in return for escape from the island.

I never thought about the sickness!! wow what a great idea, also remember Ekos reference to the hunter/farmer thing (as seen in lockes flashback)

Or perhaps he will get killed by the monster..as the real pilot did (can't believe im still referring to it as the 'monster', lol!)

Yeah, that was an interesting statement from Eko. I tend to think though that it was actually the island communicating to Locke through Eko..reminding him who he is and what he need's to do. Almost giving Locke the license to believe in himself again and to get back to his roots if you like..

This surely must connect to the fact that Desmond, Locke and (maybe) Eko escaped the hatch implosion with only a few scratches. What exactly happened so that Desmond was running around naked? How did Locke get so far away from the hatch? This reminds me of Jack in the pilot, the plane crashes on the beach yet Jack wakes up in the jungle. Is the Island protecting certain people? It certainly didn't seem to protect Eko and I'm not so sure about Desmond, although it seems to have effected him in a unique way.

I was just stunned at his naked-ness to realise what he said, but when Charlie said it at the end it sort of clicked.

It sort of shouted at my Dad and he didn't know what I was on about. Yeah I think something has happened to Des and we will find out more about this in the eps to come, because they can't just leave it at that.

I can't help but think that Desmond is dead.....

Locke saw him, but then Locke saw Boone, so.....

and Hurley saw him - and not so long ago saw his 'friend' Dave.....

I mean, I think it is a bit far-fetched, granted... but the way he was throwing stones out into the ocean - separate from the others - seemed like he wasn't really there, y'know? and the nakedness thing kind of goes with that.......

I think I'm talking rubbish, by the way, but the thought keeps coming back to me.........

The island does seem to be intervening at crucial points to protect/direct certain people doesnt it. Does this come down to the whole fate thing again? is this a part of it? is fate actually controlled by the island?

Anyway..it does seem as though the island rebirthed the 3 amigo's. However it also seems that the island can only do so much..as poor old EKo seemed to come off the worst, as you said. Although perhaps the island had to 'sacrifice' him in this instance in order to give John a renewed sense of purpose? Afterall, howelse could the island have illustrated to John that he IS a hunter? It needed to set him a little test first. Or perhaps Eko's capture by the polar bear was just a freak accident that the island could do nothing about..though it would seem to me that Eko was meant to get captured..as it appeared to me as though the island wanted Locke to regain his confidence before (hopefully) setting off to "bring the family back together"..

Hmm, thats certainly out there.. i like lateral thinking so it's worth considering all of the possibilities..

Personally though i dont think Des is dead. I think that he's in shock and that something has happened to him as a result of the implosion. My bet is that he's now got powers..powers which may also turn out to be the sickness
