Unhappy Hold on a button pushing minute!

Erm...dont get me wrong, i loved the scene where Desmond saved Locke and Locke saved Desmond (you know the one)..

BUT..knowing what we know..and how desperate old Des was to get back to the real world and live his life with Penny etc.. why then, once he heard Locke banging on the hatch door, did he not run outside and greet who he presumed to be his replacement (aka HIM)? It's not like he didnt know there was a back door..

I mean, what was Des thinking, brutha!?

Because he's scared stiff of going outside. Which is in itself slightly odd because he seemed to realise the fraud when he spotted that ripped protection suit. And yet he's still very scared of the outside world - he's stunned when Locke reveals that they've been on the beach for over a month and yet they haven't got sick. Running away was a last resort for him. He wouldn't step outside if he didn't absolutely have to.

I think he probably thought that the island was alright as long as they kept pressing the button. When he missed pressing the button he assumed the sickness was released as he stayed in the hatch and continued to take the vaccine. Therefore, when he heard Locke he was probably relieved as he knew that soon there would be someone to take over his place. Perhaps it also made him think "oh there's other people on the island, if I shoot myself that means no one can press the button and then they all die" so he therefore didn't kill himself.

I agree with Murg on this - Desmond did seem very surprised that life was still going on outside the hatch, and if the computer hadn't of been shot I reckon he would have continued to stay in the hatch. Well at least for a good while until he may have been pursuaded to go outside.

Maybe he didn't view the fact that he had seen someone on the outside as proof that it was safe for himself to go out...he was moments away from complete breakdown, and so he could just have been content with the knowledge that he wasn't truly alone in the world as enough to get by on.

Yeah..

I suppose it actually makes sense really because Des did tell Kelvin that he "can't let go, Brutha"...and thats very true because despite seeing no real evidence of the sickness, he was still afraid to go outside and let go of those fears..

Very well said Ki..I totally buy that

Afterall didnt Christian and Jack once have this conversation:

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: "You might want to try handing out some hope every once in awhile. Even if there's a 99 percent possibility that they're utterly, hopelessly screwed, folks are much more inclined to hear that 1 percent chance that things are going to be okay"

JACK: "Her spine's crushed. I tell her that everything's going to be okay -- that's false hope, dad"

CHRISTIAN SHEPARD: "Maybe. Maybe, but it's still hope."

I think the last line by Christian goes supports what you said, in that often a little bit of hope is enough to see you through. It's amazing what hope can do for the human psychy.

the desmond story confuses me because he went outside after kelvin when he realised his suit was torn (LTDA) now with the knowledge that there is no virus/ sickness why did he continue to take the medication? and what really puts the tip on the ice-berg is didnt he say to claire that the medication did nothing?? then why on the very day he left the hatch did he take the vaccination?... btw i loveeeee the thread title

I think he took the vaccination because he was still in fear that the sickness may exist, and I beleive he'd trying to forget killing Kelvin, so maybe in doing this he's forced himself to forget he saw the torn suit?

Ah yes that's a very good quote to use!

Desmond probably didn't believe that seeing someone banging on top of the hatch would be the answer to all his problems, and no doubt was still convinced that he'd be stuck down the hatch alone for many more years to come. But he then had a brief sighting - a few seconds worth of proof that he wasn't alone - which may have given him an ever so slender spark of hope that one day - but not anytime soon - his situation would change and he would be saved. And that brief encounter would be enough to fuel him for a good while yet.

But you're completely right in that even the promise of hope can completely change someone's attitude to something, especially if they have been craving it for a long time.

Maybe from habit and superstition? He carried on taking it because thats what he's always done. Also maybe there was always that 1% doubt that something bad would happen if he stopped taking it. Almost like OCD in a mild way. Like not stepping on the cracks in the pavement, because it brings bad luck. Nothing happens if you don't step on them but you won't actually do it to find out. Also like the button but the button is on a much bigger scale.

Habit, superstition, OCD?

I'm with Wizzard. I kind of got the impression that Des thought Locke was god or something. I mean, otherwise he would have gone out surely. Esdpecially when he turned the light on, that white light and Desmond prasing the heavens or whatever he was doing.

Dunno. He said that Locke 'saved' him. The choice of word seems to imply a kind of divine intervention thang going on.

That's how i look ast it anyway.
