This is my new fanfic, it's based on the island some time after the arrival of the boat, so they'll be new characters as well as our old Losties and the Others. It should be up by Thursday but here's a preview.
BEYOND THE HORIZON CHAPTER ONE - AFTERMATH OR THE BETRAYAL Kate Austin was on lookout duty - watching for a sign of the boat they had signalled two days ago from the radio tower - their best chance of rescue. Yet the event was marked with tension. Ben was being kept hostage; Rosseau was keeping watch on him with her new-found daughter Alex, who until this moment had beleived him to be her father. Charlie and Desmond had been expected back yesterday from the underwater hatch known as the Looking Glass - as yet they had failed to return. There was also the issue of 10 of the Others having been killed in the beach camp, Ben was less than pleased by their deaths; the fact that Juliet had been revealed to him as a double agent hadn't helped matters either. A noise in the darkness drove Kate's thoughts back to the present. She listened hard. Suspicious, she pulled out her gun and quietly turned off the safety. Waiting. "Hey! Hey!" A voice called from the darkness. Kate recognised it to be Desmond. "Desmond' and Charlie are back!" She cried. Sounds of people were heard from the camp, running towards her voice. No one had been asleep - everyone was waiting - for the boat, for Charlie and Desmond, for more of the Others. The night was one long wait. At least there was one less thing to worry about now. Desmond's body erupted through the trees, a look of panic on his face. There was no sign of Charlie. "Listen to me. We have to get away from here." He said, his voice urgent. A stream of voice began to protest and question this statement. Jack's stepped forward. "What are you talking about?" He asked, he alone in the group did not look panicked or confused. "There's no time. I swear to you, brother, as soon as we get inland I will explain everything buit we have to leave now. Those people on the boat aren't who they say they are. We have to leave now or we are going to die." Desmond's tone and facial expression showed he was not joking; he was deadly serious. People began to hurry back to the camp, packing up their things and gathering supplies. Rosseau went and untied Ben. A small group remained around Desmond. "As we go I want to hear how you know of this." Sayid said, his gaze fixated of Desmond. Jack was shaking his head, claerly annoyed. "I don't beleive this. We spent all this time finding a way to get rescued. Rescue finally comes, and you're telling me they want us dead?" He said, failing to keep the sarcasm from his voice. "And here I was thinking I'd get a good night's sleep." Said Sawyer. Jack turned to him angrily but before he could do anything Claire asked a question that made them both freeze. "Where's Charlie?" The urgent look vanished from Desmond's face to be replaced by one of sympathy and sadness. Claire immediatley guessed what he was about to say. "I'm sorry Claire. He's dead." Claire fainted. Jack ran to Claire's side and began to try and wake her. Desmond was getting restless. "We have to get moving!" He said. "We can carry her until we get somewhere safe." This was quickly agreed, Desmond picked up Claire and began to carry her with him, Hurley carried Aaron and the group began to head into the trees. Jack alone refused to go. Kate stayed behind to try to talk him round and urged the group to go on without her. After much arguing and urdgent comments from Desmond they complied, leaving the two alone. "Jack, at least hear what Desmond has to say before staying here, you saw how serious he was." She pleaded. "No, I'm gonna stay here and I'm gonna meet the people on that boat. I'm gonna meet tham and hear their story before I decided they're killers." "Then I'll wait with you." Kate said. "Live together, die alone. Right?" Jack shook his head. "Kate you're not risking your life out here." "But you're gonna risk yours? I make my own decisions Jack." She said. "Well I'm making this one for you." He replied. "Nice to see you again, Jack. I didn't know we'd have company." A voice said from the darkness. Jack tensed. "We don't. Let her go and meet the others." He said, refusing to look at Kate. "I'm afraid that's not possible." The voice said. Gunfire erupted through the trees. Kate's hand stretched out to Jack but missed. It always missed. Kate woke shaking and crying out for Jack. "Damn it Freckles, keep your voice down or you're gonna get us all killed." A voice nearby whispered. "Jack." She cried weakly. Sawyer's face looked over at her, his cigarette illuminating a few nearby faces which were all gazing at her. The moon and his cigarette were the only light in the darkness of the caves. "The Doc's gone, Freckles. He's gone and he ain't never comin' back." Last edited by lost-lover; 01-07-2008 at 07:55 PM. |

CHAPTER TWO - OPERATION SURVIVAL
The night dragged on with the usual look-out posted around the edges of the caves. The Oceanic crash survivors had banded together with several of the Others; namely those who had been present from the day the message had been sent from the radio tower. As it was, the partnership had caused alot of tension, not least because Ben was still under permanent watch - Sayid was less than happy to the man who had ordered the death of himself and two friends to be given a free reign on the island. Four days had past since the boats arrival, four days since Jack's apparent demise. The survivors hadn't attempted contact - taking the shooting as a hint that the people on the boat were less than willing to help them out. Kate's condition meanwhile, was also deteriating. "We need to do something about this wound. Someone bring me some more antibiotics." Said Juliet, her face white as she took in the extent of Kate's injuries. Soon infection would set in. "You want to do this now? It's barely dawn!" Said Sawyer. "That wound needs medical attention fast or she'll get infected. I'll need someone to help me and to keep her quiet." Replied Juliet. "She won't even stay quiet in her sleep, always crying for the Doc. You expect her to stay quiet while you're doing surgery on her in a cave with no anesthetic?" Exclaimed Sawyer. "Yeah, that'll work." "James, they shot her. She needs help or she will die. Look at her, she's delerious, and I don't think she even knows we're here. This is urgent. I'm no surgeon but right now I'm her only hope." "You think I don't know that? You think I want her to die?" The southerner was quickly getting angry. "You do this now and she starts screaming again, they'll find us. And they'll kill us." He looked away before quietly adding. "And don't call me James." "It's a risk we'll have to take if we want Kate to live Sawyer." Said Sayid, joining the concersation. "We can keep Kate quiet. We also have lookouts around the whole perimeter, as well as Rosseau scouting the nearby areas. I can not say I am thrilled by this but we have little choice." "Gimme a break, she ain't even a surgeon!" It was clear that Sawyer was torn in two directions. He wanted them to save Kate and it was clear to everyone he cared for her, but he didn't want to risk giving away their location to the invaders. Juliet was worried too, though she hid it well. So much was riding on this and if she made one wrong move it would all be for naught. Kate would die and in all liklihood so would they. "I told you. I told you if you contacted the boat you'd all die." Ben chuckled. "Bet you regret not listening to me now, huh?" Karl punched Ben in the face, looking as though it gave him immense satisfaction. Everyone went quiet and looked at the teenager; Ben looked as though he couldn't beleive what had happened. "I wanted to get him back for brainwashing me." Karl shrugged as he quickly applied a gag to Ben with Alex's help. Sawyer smirked. "I think I like that kid." Kate was aware of the conversation around her, the light showing on the horizon and the pain in her chest. Vaguely. Everything seemed a blur, unreal. She remembered Sawyer telling her Jack was gone, she knew he was right and Jack could not have survived that shot. Yet she couldn't register the simple fact - the undeniable truth - Jack Shepard, her first friend on the island, the first man she'd ever been in love with, was now dead. FLASHBACK: Kate heard the gunshot ring out echo through the quietness of the beach combined the nearby screams of several of her island companions as if things happened in slow montion. Forgetting the a stranger with a gun could just as easily have shot her she ran towards Jack, catching his body as he fell, gripping onto his hands. She didn't notice that no blood had left the wound, and to her it didn't matter. Jack, her Jack, was dying. His eyes began to close as they locked onto hers, blue into brown. He whispered to her "Run." His message delivered, his hand went slack in hers, his eyes closed and his breathing stilled. "No!" Kate screamed. "Jack! Jack!" Jack's assassin moved in the darkness. Kate heard a gun ****. The last thing she heard was a pop, then darkness. She woke in the caves several hours later in the darkness of the caves, screaming for Jack, who had left her forever. END FLASHBACK. The argument had finally been settled. Juliet was to attempt surgery on Kate's gunshot wound. Sun would be helping her and Sayid and Sawyer would be restraining Kate while attempting to keep her quiet. Neither man looked happy with this choice of events. Hurley was sat near to Desmond and Claire, who was still in a state of shellshock over the news of Charlie's death. Hurley was to help by making sure Juliet had all the equipment she needed. He was looking apprehensive; Hurley hated blood. The operation began sucessfully. Juliet set to work and began mopping away the dried blood around the wound to ensure a clearer view for her work, Sawyer was keeping Kate quiet. Sayid was nearby and Sun was waiting for further instructions from Juliet. Juliet was still nervous; this job would be difficult, more so due to an extensive lack of proper medical equipment and the need to keep her patient during what was sure to be a painful procedure. Just when they needed Jack, she thought with a pang of sadness. Shaking her head to keep her mind on the job at hand, she picked up a needle to start work on Kate's stitches. A split second before the needle reached Kate Sawyer and Sayid stood up and walked off, focused on something behind her. "I know you're not exactly happy about me doing this but you leaving at a vital stage is definately not a good way to let me know." Said Juliet angrily. Turning to look at them she could see that their urupt departure had little to do with the operation. A general panic had insued among the group, as a gap form she could see why. The look-out guard - Jin, Locke and Rossaeu - were back. She and Sun walked quickly to the group now huddld around the new arrivals, arriving just in time to hear a message which she was dreading. "They've found us." |

Not much happens in this one I had to rewrite it because my computer deleted the original when it crashed.
![]() CHAPTER 3 - WHEN DANGER CALLS Rousseau's words echoed through the silent caves; three simple words that chilled the survivours and sent them into a state of action. It was time to move again. Gathering supplies, getting ready to once more travel to a new hidaway; they were quickly becoming accustomed to running for their lives. "We can't move Kate, look at that wound!" Cried Juliet, gesturing to the bullet hole in Kate's stomach. "Listen Jules, we'll carry her. If I managed to travel halfway across this rock with a bullet in my shoulder running from you and your pals then I think she can manage being carried a couple of miles." Sawyer neglected to mention that he'd passed out halfway through the journey. Juliet looked at him angrily, but knew that there was no choice in the matter. If they stayed here the people from the boat would find them, they had to run, and hope Kate could hold on a little longer. "You're lucky they didn't arrive a few minutes later when I'd began the surgery." "Well then it's a blessing in disguise." Smirked the southerner. Juliet felt like punching the man, but knew his sarcasm was his way of hiding his true feelings - he was scared for Kate's life. "Okay let's move." Said Sayid, leading a group of people out of the caves. "If we all leave now they'll come right after us, you don't even know where you're running too." Said Locke. "If you have an idea then feel free to share it." Replied Sayid sharply. "I say we leave a few people behind here to hold of any attacks and provide a decoy while most of our people get to safety." Locke said. Silence greeted this statement. "Are you insane, brother?" Asked Desmond. "That's suicide!" "No, it's not." Locke smiled. "We know where they're coming from, and Rousseau, you say they didn't see your exact location?" "They know we are nearby, that is enough for them. It's only a matter of time before they find us." Rousseau said. Her and Alex were guarding Ben. "Okay, but we have some time. Let's leave 3 people here at the caves." "Okay Rambo, I'm in." Said Sawyer. After a momentary hesitation Desmond and Jin both agreed to stay behind. Sun looked less than pleased at this turn of events. "Well, that's sorted. Okay, Sayid I want you to lead everyone else to the Other's homes. The one with the sonic fence. You can use that to protect yourselves while we defend things here." "That won't work. You need a code to make it work." Ben smirked. "I'll tell it them. They need our help and it's about time you started working with them, Ben." Alex glared at the man who, for 16 years, she'd believed to be her father. Ben looked in sursprise in Alex. "Oh I'm being fully co-operative, and I'd gladly give them the code. I was thinking, though, that Richard and the rest of our people will be less willing to help them, especially considering that you, Sayid," Here he glared at Sayid. "And your two friends killed 7 of our people. This will make for a slightly uneasy alliance, wouldn't you say?" "You would have kidnapped our women, can you blame us for defending ourselves." Said Sayid. "We were doing that to keep them alive." Retorted Ben. Sun shivered behind him. "Ben." Juliet was watching him. "Oh, don't even get me started on you." He said dismissively. "If your done with your little spat, I'd like to remind you we're under threat and can discuss this later. Sayid, lead everyone to the other's camp. I want Desmond and Jin to stay guard here while you head off." "Unless you forgot I volunteered too." Said Sawyer, looking annoyed at being forgotten. "Oh, I didn't forget. You're coming with me, and Rousseau if she'd agree." Locke was now grinning mysteriously. "But..." Alex started, looking fearful. "Alex. I have lived on this island for 16 years and I know how to take care of myself. You and Karl should go with Sayid. Don't worry about me." Said Rousseau smiling. "It's time for me to defend my home. Now I can also defend my family. I didn't think that would ever be possible." "Very touching, but can we get a move on?" Asked Sawyer. Rousseau hugged Alex and Jin spoke quietly to Sun, kissing her goodbye, then Sayid began to lead everyone out of the caves in silence, his gun in hand. Sawyer and Locke checked their handguns and Rousseau shouldered her shotgun before the three took off in the opposite direction, leaving Desmond and Jin alone in the caves. Once the three were out of earshot from everyone else Rousseau turned to Locke. "I have left the daughter who I have just found to come and help you. Now I want to know why." "You ain't the only one." Drawled Sawyer. "Why'd you want us two to stay behind and come charging off with you? Since we ain't stayin' with Jin and Des, where we going?" Locke smiled. "We're going after the people from the boat." |

CHAPTER 4: THE HORIZON Sawyer was less than happy about Locke's plan. "You out of your damn mind?" He shouted the moment he'd got over his shock. "They'll kill us the moment they see us!" "Well, I wasn't planning on letting them see us, but if you keep yelling we'll lose the element of surprise." Said Locke calmly. "So are we attacking them or just spying on them?" Asked Rousseau. "I was planning to spy on them and get some details which could help us for a later attack. Their numbers, weapons and hopefully the location of their camp for starters. I don't think the 3 of us attacking alone would be wise." Replied Locke. "Gosh, what makes you say that?" Asked Sawyer, his voice dripping with sarcasm. "James, if you don't want to be here, you're welcome to turn back at any time." Said Locke. "I volunteered so I'm staying!" Retorted Sawyer. "But we already lost the Doc to these folks, and there's a good chance that Kate could die too," A momentary look of pain crossed Sawyer's face as he said this, "I don't think we should give 'em a free shot at the rest of us." "The only reason I am with you now is because of my daughter. Alone I could hide, but now I have found her I don't intend to lose her again." Said Rousseau. Locke nodded in acknowlegdement of this, then montioned for Sawyer and Rousseau to follow him. He went through the trees in silence on a trail Sawyer soon realised led to their old beach camp - where they'd lost Jack. "Hey, why we going to the beach?" He asked Locke, then he turned to Rousseau. " |
