..what if Ben had pulled the wheel backwards, instead of forwards.....

Would he have shuttled back in time instead of 8 months forward? Was this a choice he made (i.e. not wanting to take the chance of going back to the time of Dharma for obvious reasons)?

Isnt time travel random? So do we know whether he's gone backwards or forwards in time? (If we do then I need sleep)

It would indeed seem that way..at least via the wheel mechanism:

We know that Ben has gone forward in time because he asks the receptionist for the date, and she tells him that it's October 2005. So he jumped 8 months into the future. By which time Sayid and Noor had gotten together, married and she had died.

Ah I see it is random yet we know the date.
Well then I don't know maybe it would of gone randomly backwards in time.
