There was one line between Ben and Locke that really caught my attention in this episode. It was when Ben graciously apologised to John for "making your life difficult". Somewhere around that line he goes on to say that Locke will do a better job that he has done, and that he's "intuituve" and 'always finds his way'.
I find the reference of 'intuition' really interesting because intuition (or being intuitive) is exactly as Ben said:..being able to find reason despite an apparent lack of knowledge. Wikipedia defines it as follows: Quote:
So how did Locke do it? How did a crippled man..a down and outer find the inner strength and direction to get to this point? ..As Ben says, he's 'intuitive'. He may not know where he's going but he FEELS it..he feels whats right and goes with it. Much like his new philospher namesake Jeremy Bentham, he is guided by pleasure and pain. It's this intuition which connects him to guidance..and instictive need to follow a certain path..even if such paths causes confusions like 'am I a farmer or a hunter?'..am i a 'man of faith or a man of science?' Truth is, Locke is all of these things (imo), and the more I think about his journey, the more I believe that Locke is not being guided by ONE force..but by TWO. It is this IN-TWO-ITION which gives him direction, but also internal conflict: "Nope, not a farmer..I'm a HUNTER!" "DON'T TELL ME WHAT I CAN'T DO!!" "I'VE DONE EVERYTHING YOU ASKED, BUT WHHHY DID YOU DO THIS TO MEEE!!!!" Indeed, Locke said it best on that sandy beach: "TWO SIDES..ONE IS LIGHT..ONE IS DARK". It is my belief that Locke's intuition (ability to find his way despite a lack of any apparent experience or knowledge) is being fed by two forces (sides) who need him to complete his destiny in THEIR image. These forces both needed John on the island..they both helped him to get to the island.. Does this sound familiar? How about now: Alpert "We've been waiting for you for a long time John" Abbadon "You need to go on a Walkabout..one of these days, when we bump into each other..you'll OWE me one". In my mind these sides are part of a much bigger game (or 'design') than we've yet been treated to. But I believe that the final two seasons of the show will reveal just how much of a design John Locke is..and perhaps..if Alpert's Dalai-Lamaesque scene with young Locke is anything to go by, just how many chances these side have had to get it right..THIS time..this FINAL time.. Indeed, the notion of loops fits very well with the notion of intuition. One could be said to be intuitive if their intuition/knowledge comes from a past experience of living this life, no?.. Has Locke lives before.. Has Locke gained experience this way? Have the forces guiding him perfected their variables and chances of succeeding this way? ![]()
