Can anyone offer up any explanations as to why the creators had Jack save Desmond's life on the raft? It's almost passed me by, but considering Jack's hang-ups on being the "hero" and getting everyone home, i'm thinking that the writers put it in there for a reason.
Was it to make their "see you in another life" goodbye more powerful..or was it to add another layer on Jack's 'hero' complex? It just seems strange, because (imo) compared to his other 'heroics' (i.e. ressucertating Charlie in S1), it seems a little half-hearted on the part of the creators. ![]()

Personally, I thought it was to make it more dramatic on the side of the writers. We, the viewers, knew that all the O6 must survive the helicopter crash and get rescued. What we didn't know, however, was if Frank and Desmond would survive. I think adding the drama of Desmond almost dying made it a more exciting scene.
As we've seen with near-death experiences with the O6 - a la Jack's appendix - it's not very exciting coz we know they're going to survive. I also thought it was more realistic, having at least one person having a bit of an injury from the crash. In reference to why it was Jack, I agree with you on the idea of it adding to Jack's hero complex. It's like, even though they're free and about to be rescued, he still can't stop being the hero. It seems no matter where Jack goes he'll always be the hero. Tis a good point.

I don't think its all just about his hero complex. Jack would be the logical choice for performing CPR on Desmond because he is a doctor. I agree with Beachy though. It was all for drama. The writers love to make us squirm.

![]() But I also like to think that it was sort of a summary, He came a hero, He left a Hero... but will he return a hero?? *Dum dum dum* ![]()

Perhaps the island will 'heal' Jack this time and he'll become a Hero again. Notice that the island didn't heal him when he had appendicitis because he was planning to leave. It seems like a reward thing.
It healed Rose though because she had faith that she would see Bernard again and more importantly, I don't think she wanted to leave the island. Last edited by Miss Austen; 06-09-2008 at 05:14 PM. |

Did anyone think jack was panicked in this scene, i kinda thought it was strange bein a doctor an all.
Don't quite remember the exact words but something like a panicked "IS HE BREATHING, IS HE BREATHING". Not very Jack IMO. What do you think?

I really like this quote and it is a good point actually.
Interesting topic. I think I also agree with B.C while adding having the possibility of Desmond drowning was MORE emotional than Frank, even though I really like Frank. But there may very well - and will likely be - revelance to Jack saving Desmond. We could argue that Desmond saved Jack at the stadium. He injected "hope" into Jack, albeit AFTER the operation but he made Jack believe nonetheless - or so I would like to think. "But what if you did?" - "You have to lift it up" - I think this 'did' something to Jack. I think Desmond and Jack's "connection" OFF-Island was probably why they chose Jack to save Desmond in this episode, while also [as D-Roc says] making the "see you in another life" goodbye more powerful.
